Restringing my guitar - the nut came off

First off, a thing is worth exactly what someone will pay for it. There is no universal standard of value. Second, there is a pretty huge difference in the sound of a cheap guitar vs. a very well made one, and well made doesn't mean hand made. I play acoustics and have a '74 Martin D18. These days Martin uses a lot of CNC in the parts prep process of making their guitars, and they still sound hands down better than almost anything else you can buy. The difference is in the quality of the woods, the design, and the quality of assembly and finishing. In fact they are probably _better_ guitars with the precision of CNC milling.

really?

you think so ?

so putting awesome pickups on a shit guitar won't help?

i bet you'd be and are wrong.

This was a thread about helpful tips about guitar maintenance. It degenerated into the stereotypical Internet "I like to deconstruct heroes to show my superiority" crap.

yup, unfortunately that is a really hard thing to avoid, oh well. I think some good advice came from this thread and I hope the op got the answer they were looking for. Rock on.

Yeah, pretty weird. It was just a simple question, and I unsubscribed from this thread a LONG time ago.

I'm a big fan of this stuff. It has an applicator pad built in and lets you rub the oil in really well.

BTW- it's important to scrape all of your finger gunk off the frets before you oil them, otherwise that gunk will become part of the wood. A credit card seems to work well for that.

i use this every single time on my rosewood tele. it says not to on maple necks FWIW. there's a method to the madness on string changes for sure. i wipe every single fret after rubbing the yellow lemon oil on every fret with my finger:thumbsup:

Well as I said I play acoustics so I don't really know what effect great pickups would have on a shit guitar. Probably the same effect a really nice suit has on my appearance...

I don't know about that... don't get me wrong, they do make a great many fine guitars, but you're also paying an upcharge because it says Martin on the headstock.

Of course. That's always the case with a respected and thus popular brand. And naturally this is all opinion, but its an opinion that is shared by a great many professional musicians. Martin didn't become the brand it is because people like the name.

Yeah, just saying they don't sound "hands down better" than Taylors or Breedloves, for example 😉

Hmmm, I haven't played Breedloves but I do think Martin's sound hands down better than Taylors. Its just personal preference I know. The Martin dreadnought lines have awesome bass response.

They all have tonal qualities that people seek. Taylors have a bright and jangly sound. Martins are know for deep and warm tones. Breedloves are somewhere in between.

Play one of the Grand Orchestra bodies and see what you think 🙂
I don't have any particular brand loyalty, I have a Taylor and a Seagull Artist and they're both great... when I'm ready to drop over two grand on another acoustic guitar, my stable may finally have a Martin.

My wife paid like $1700 for my D18 (used, 1974) when she picked it up for my 40th birthday. Probably be a little more now. My cousin has a 1973 D35 that would get around $5k if he sold it.

It's a ways out for me, the next high-dollar instrument purchase is most likely to be a nice mandolin 🙂
