Restarting computer

Hi
I have a weird problem with my computer.
The motherboard is a Asus A7v-133 (5 years old)
I have the latest bios in it.
When I download software or do a new install of software and then have to restart the computer the computer will post and then freeze before Windows loads. I have to use the reset button to start the pc again. When it restarts it sometimes freezes again. Or,,, it will restart and take me into the bios setup where I have to set the cpu speed and ram and sometimes the boot sequence on the floppy drive, cd rom and hard drive.
What is weird about this is if I turn the pc off in a normal manner and then back on everything loads normally. Rarely if I do an update such as updating the firmware on the dvd rom drive and so it will freeze un startup.
The pc is 5 years old. When I power it down I let Windows shut it down. I have all my peripheral?s plugged into a Belkin power strip and when the pc shuts down I power the power strip down cutting power to everything. The pc is set up to power on when ac power is turned on at the power strip.
There are no other problems with the pc. Just a wild guess here?. I think the motherboard has a battery that keeps the bios ?alive? and other things from wiping out. Could the battery be bad? Um,,, never replaced that battery!!! LOL
I just remembered,,,, when it freezes it always freezes on the post when in the screen is says something about Plug and Play????..

I know the system is 5 years old. Any and all help is needed!!!
Thanks

HI
The pc is stable when running Windows. Never any crashes. .
Sometimes it freezes up when I try to do too much. (like burn a cd or dvd and run other programs) Then the pc will freeze. Just runing a single function the pc is ok.
The cpu is a t-berd 1200 running at 1300. 768 mb of ram. 3 hard drives with around 300 gig of storage space.
I'll do the memory test and see what happens.
Thanks

Just a wild shot here. Did you altar anything in the BIOS? Try looking at "Halt on all errors." Is it enabled or disabled?

the halt on all errors dosent explain why it freezes during windows op. and when a bios has an error and catches it you can usually just hit f1 to continue. i have to put my .02 in to testing the ram fully with memtest. what u explained about it freezing when u are running too many things in windows sounds like a classic case of a bad sector on a ramstick. once you use enough ram to hit the bad sector it freezes the comp up. maybe not the prob, but worth eliminating as a possibility
