new pc, modem, etc. from Newegg. You know the 3com/usr oem modem Newegg sells? That one. ok. This is what I have installed in my system at this very moment:

mb: Asus a7n266-c
hdd: seagate 60g
video: geforce3
cd: liteon cdrw 32x12x40

onboard sound disabled (no reason)

I loaded win98se with the modem in the board. I loaded it and added the modem afterward. loaded it with and without sound. must've loaded windows 6 times in the last couple days! (goes pretty quick with the xp 1969+ I have=1800 @ 143mhz [fsb?]) I switched pci slots. still the same issue: It doesn't work after a reboot. It installs and connects fine and works until I reboot. I have to remove it from device man., reboot and reinstall without rebooting for it to work again. (simple solution: don't reboot) I installed it in my old biostar pentium board without any problem at all! I even tried disabling the serial and parallel ports in the bios. I used to know a guy who could talk to modems...
Any help is greatly appreciated. Been working on this all night.:p Just d-loaded the drivers from usr.com and they're older than what came with the modem. oh well. I'm gonna say it's something about irq's or io's.

In control panel\modems diagnostics more info, the modem says it's schpeal when it's first installed. Then, when rebooted, it says that the port is already open. No yellow or red marks in device man. Any clues??? works good now

<< go into bios, integrated perifrals, set com 2 ( or onboard uart) to disable >>

only things I could disable were the serial and parallel ports. Is there a way to kill UART from within windows 98? I'll try reloading windows and installing everything before the modem.
Could it be that the modem is waiting for a fax call? It is a fax modem. Sonofa! A funny thing is that it works fine in my older machine where everything was jumper-controlled. Still trying...for another day. Then it's time for a new modem. After about 15 win98 installs.

a special thanks, Cholley!

Did that. Nothin doing. Reloaded windows again and installed the modem even b4 m/b drivers. Same thing--Opencomm [huh?] says port is already open. crap. I have no clue whatsoever. I guess I'll uninstall/reinstall it everytime I turn off the pc till I figure this one out.:disgust: ughhh!!!!! what a pisser. I hate calling tech support.

only things sharing irq with it were nForce pci mgt. and 3 instances of irq steering. seems odd that there's 3. went to Microshaft support pages and looked for the Opencomm message "port already open." gave an article about 3com modems in windows 98, surprisingly! guess 3com has some port monitoring software that hogs the port. I'll try uninstalling it or modifying one of the driver files. good God, how fun.
