As the officers approached to take him into custody, the suspect opened fire with his rifle, leading to a gun battle in which Detective Pearson was fatally wounded and a second detective suffered a gunshot wound to his neck.

The suspect was shot several times by deputies and died from his wounds.

From the link: age not available.

I'm getting older but really, he looks like a kid to me. Just like some of the young Americans who die in our wars, way too young.🙁

That photo was probably taken in the academy a few years ago. I hadn't heard this yet and Lenoir County is the next county over from where I live.

Yeah this was on the news, I'm up in Raleigh.

So much death lately. Carthage retirement home, NY, Pittsburg, this, and a few others I'm forgetting. Bad time to be a cop.

I think I find that website more disturbing than anything.

A memorial page for fallen officers is disturbing?

You, sir, disturb me. 😕

The suspect was shot several times by deputies and died from his wounds.

The single bright spot to the whole affair.

At least this lunatic won't be able to do it again. Ever.

i dunno... i think that is the easy way out for the criminal. Let him live and make him suffer for a few months, then give him the electric chair.

RIP

I find that the way our culture idolizes the dead, the way that we make them larger than life...to be a bit disturbing. It has nothing to do with the guy being a cop (though we certainly idolize them more than most), but is a general thing.

I saw this on the news last night, I get lenoir county news out of new bern, NC.

http://www.wcti12.com/News12.asp
A Lenoir County deputy was killed last night during a shoot-out near Grifton, and another was wounded. News of this tragedy has spread quickly throughout Kinston and Lenoir County.

Friends and co-workers say both Allen Pearson and Ryan Dawson come from families with a long history of law enforcement. Flags are flying at half staff outside the courthouse, and a black ribbon now hangs on the front door of the sheriff's office.

"You see these people everyday. You work with them everyday," said Maj. Chris Hill, with the Lenoir County Sheriff's Department. "I stand here and see one of your own people trying to live, trying to breathe. It is indescribable how much it rips at you."

Deputies Allen Pearson and Ryan Dawson were both shot when they tried to stop Clarence Phillips from shooting bullets into nearby woods in Grifton. The men both worked for the sheriff's Special Response Team, and were well trained, but during the gun fight, Deputy Pearson was shot and killed, and his good friend Deputy Dawson was hit in the neck by a bullet. Dawson is now at Pitt Memorial Hospital with his family.

"I knew his parents, and we've done some dealing with the sheriff's department," said Chris Maroules, a friend of the Pearson family. "You hate to see anything like this come up."

Dozens of people have been stopping by the sheriff's office all day to offer their prayers and condolences, and to let the entire department know the people of Lenoir County appreciate their sacrifice.

Both deputies are married. Deputy Dawson also has two kids, and his father is retired from the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office. As for Allen Pearson, the deputy killed, his father still works for the sheriff's office as a major.

Detective Allen Pearson will be laid to rest this weekend.

A visitation for the fallen hero will take place tomorrow night at the Howard-Carter Funeral Home in Kinston from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Kinston High School Performing Arts Center.

Law enforcement officers from across the state are expected to pay their respects.

Detective Allen Pearson was shot Tuesday night in the woods near Grifton. Authorities say Clarence Phillips killed him, before Phillips was fatally shot. Pearson has been with the Lenoir County Sheriff's Department since 2001, and leaves behind a wife.

He was 29. RIP

Remember guys, you might run into a cop who comes off as a dick, but in the end they are out there doing their jobs to try and make our lives a tad bit safer.

Very sad. I live in Pittsburgh and they held the funeral prosession today for the 3 officers killed in last weeks stand off. They closed most of the streets (in Oakland) as there were nearly 15,000 police officers alone that attended. Something insane to see ......police cars parked in a 5 lane road as far as you can see.

That's sad. More dirt bags should get shot in the head on the scene instead of going through trials and stored in overcrowded prisons.
