Depends if it's your first time out or whatnot. I've been playing for 3 years, but my first year, i'd be shooting 120-130. You should learn about course rating and slope, especially a course's slope because a typical course has a slope of 113, so if you're playing a 130+ slope course, it'll be a long day for a bogey or noob golfer. Here's a link to a definition of the two http://www.leaderboard.com/abcs.htm Anyway, if you're a noob, stick to a course with a low slope or you'll be in for a long day. Harder courses that require exact shots, long shots, shot-making ability, etc. You can also always play from the front tees (not female) if you're not a decent player. Some courses may have signs with recommended tee boxes for certain handicap players ;-)
Anyway, if you want to get good, just stick to it and keep at it. I started 3 years ago and am down to a 8 handicap. I've done this without lessons, so I'm sure you could too
If you're playing a par 3 course and going around twice, I'm sure the slope is pretty low, and most muni courses also. There are exceptions, but that's the general rule.
