what is a respectable everyday overclock?

type of overclock that is a GOOD BALANCE between reasonable stability and reasonable performance.

example. i5-760 2.8GHz will max out at 4.2GHz with CM 212 Evo Single Fan. temp maxed 85C when stress tested. ambient 27C.

3.5GHz seem to be a Good Balance point? Agree or Disagree? Why and Why Not?

I would happily take it to 4Ghz nice round number. The stability and heat production improvements in dropping that last 0.2GHz is huge.

Typically the last 200-300Mhz is the hard fought bit and thus dropping those few multipliers brings quite dramatic power savings without giving up a lot of performance. But it really depends on the chip and how much voltage it took at each step. A tool like HWMonitor can give you an estimate of power draw so you can use that combined with the overclocks to determine how much power saving you are seeing at the particular clock speeds.

guess everyone must keep it just right below the max oc.

with the example on the original post - 4.199 GHz.
