**RESOLVED**(sort of)-xp client cannot join 2000 server

I am having problems getting a Windows XP machine to join a 2000 server domain. The rest of the computers are running either XP or 2000pro and they are on the domain. This one was upgraded from win98. The machine is getting assigned an ip within the range that the dhcp on 2000 server is set to assign. Any ideas on why this machine might be having a problem while other XP machines are not. Thanks in advance for any help.

Windows XP Home cannot be part of a domain. Check that machine to see if it's running XP Home or Professional.

it is windows xp pro. When I try to join the domain and enter the administrator credentials i get the following error:

remote system refused connection.

If i try to ping another computer I get

ping: transmit failed, error code 65.

Thanks for any help

Verify that the DNS of the Win XP machine is pointing to your DC that is running DNS and not your ISP. It is important that the client is pointed at the DC running DNS so the client machine can properly locate the DC so it can join the domain.

you mean to make sure I have the server ip address set as my prefered dns server address in the XP box? If so this is already done.

Can you ping yourself? Check to make sure your tcp/ip settings are correct. And check your host files as well since you upgarded from 98. Was this machine on the network previously? Is this a home machine, work machine? Check your nic card, sounds like you have simple connection problems.

Did you have a compelling reason to upgrade from Windows 98 to XP, instead of a clean install? I've often run into funny errors when doing an upgrade install like that....

i went with a clean install and it worked like a charm. I could not renew once i got an IP. The wierd thing is that another machine that I upgraded was able to get on the domain with no problem. It was more of an annoyance that I could not figure it out. Thanks for all the help guys.
