RESOLVED, sort of: Installed NV Silencer on 6800U and temps went up

I installed an NV Silencer on my 6800 Ultra today. Although it's way quieter, my temps at idle have jumped from 53C to 83C. I've tried reapplying AS5 probably a dozen times and the best result I've gotten so far is 67C idle. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

RESOLUTION: I used the silicon paste that was included with the cooler, temps are now 58C idle and I did a really crappy job of putting it on the first time (since it doesnt spread as easily as AS5).

You might be using to much artic silver.

I tried taking most of it off the core and temps were like 92C. Right now I put on the most I have so far and temps are down to like 64C.

How tight did you turn the screws?

Not extremely tight. Enough so that the rubber washers were being slightly compressed.

Sounds like you were far better off with stock? I don't know that Silencers do a whole lot for cooling, but it should have went down some. Seems to me about 7C is what I saw in the last review I read. They are nice and quiet though.

I really don't want to go back to stock. It's too loud and annoying, and it's a pain to reinstall it with all those screws.

Sounds to me like it's not making good contact with the core... when you take the heatsink off, has most of the thermal compound been pushed away from where the core touches the heatsink? It should if it was making good contact.

agreed. Soundslike its not making good contact with the core.

No, it actually appears to be making good contact. It is more or less evenly spread across the core.

Might sound like a stupid question but... have you verified that the fan is working?

what are your LOAD temps? most people with NV5's load temps are only a few degrees higher than idle, so if that is the case you arent THAT bad off..
just MAKE SURE that you used a small ammount of AS5, and screw the NV5 down tight.

It is turning in the right direction but doesn't seem to be expelling air very well.

Odd, the NV Silencer drops temps on ULRAS about 5-7 degress. You most likily did something wrong when installing it.

What? For one thing, he already voided the warrenty, second off, he was geting 53C idle with stock cooling so he obviously did something wrong when installing it.

he might have gotten an NV5 that wasnt...sanded correctly or something, so its making bad contact.

Oh, heh, well that might be the case but I highly doubt it.

Try AS Ceramique. My first 6800 that I put the NV5 on I used that AS5 and my temps were higher. Not as high as you are getting but it was higher. I've installed 4 of these NV5's over the last 3 months for different friends and after my fist experience and AS5 I just used the AS Ceramique and that seemed to work better in that 5 to 7 cell decrease range in core temp.

Worth a try.

Ha! Found the culprit. I removed AS5 from the memory and core and used the silicon paste that came with the cooler. Now my temps are 58C idle, 75C load. I may try the Ceramique stuff at some point but this is definitely an improvement.
