I already had XP installed on my system and installed 98 now on a different volume. So when I boot the system starts with XP and doesnt give me the option of 98 at all. I heard this is because a new version of OS should be installed after an older version.

Is there any way I can get to do a multiple boot without uninstalling XP and reinstalling it again??

Thanx Chad... Jus one more thing.... I have XP SP1 cd but SP2 got installed through automatic updates. If I run the recovery console from the XP SP1 cd would it change SP2 back to SP1.

Dunno if thats a stupid question!! :-D

Chad.. It wont let me run the recovery console because I have SP2. It gives me the messsage you have a newer version.

Can I download it??

I wonder if you realise that your C: has to be fat 32 even if you install Windows 98 on a different partition as some files which are used by Windows 98 are installed on C.
If C: is formatted as NTFS nothing you do will get your Windows 98 to boot up.

Why not make the partition with 98 active and set the boot.ini on that partition to give you two choices? Then, it will always refer to the 98 partition (FAT) to decide which partition to boot. Wouldn't that work?

Don't think so. If he's got XP and NTFS on c: drive, he's screwed AFAIK.

I'm now in the habit of just installing 98se first on C: in order to avoid these problems.

If somebodies got a handy work-around, I'd like to know. :thumbsup:

you can't have a drive in 2 diff formats. it can only be one or the other. You would have 2 format and install 98 first then XP. Why u need to run 98 anyways?

There is a solution suggested here.
It is almost at the bottom of the page under "Here is how to install win98/ME on a computer with winxp/2000 already installed on a NTFS partition".

I have done this a long time ago. I know that it is possible. But, it has been so long that I do not remember the detail.

I dinno that C: has to be FAT. I have installed 98 on a different volume (not on a different parition) altogether which is FAT.

Hrm, ok, in that case ...

Follow these instructions to slipstream SP2 onto your Windows install CD.

I was not able to do the slipstream of XP with SP2. When i tried it, it started extracting files from i386 folder to a temp folder in the root.. then finally it shows the help menu for sp2 with all the commands. soon the temp folder which got created in root disappears..

And it gives me this error message:

This Service Pack cannot be integrated into a destination that also has integrated Software Updates. Consult the Service Pack documentation for more details about supported integration scenarios

That's not tough to fix. In the folder you extracted your XP CD to, go to \I386\SVCPACK and delete everything there. Then go to \I386 and open up the svcpack.inf file. Remove everything under the [SetupHotfixesToRun] and [ProductCatalogsToInstall] sections. Try the slipstream again.

tried tht.. no luck.. i have a file named "WIN51IC.SP1" in the root. Also the svcpack.inf file looks like this now:

[Version]
Signature="$Windows NT$"
BuildNumber=2600
MajorVersion=5
MinorVersion=1

[SetupData]
CatalogSubDir="i386\svcpack"

[ProductCatalogsToInstall]

[SetupHotfixesToRun]

Bingo.. Got it.. I had to delete the "svcpack" folder and the "svcpack.inf" file. So am able to do it now..

Now back to my original question,Chad... Installing 98 after XP. I should try the bootcfg command n if that doesnt work then the solution Navid gave me...

Am on it..
