*RESOLVED* BSOD during Fresh Windows XP install - New SB built

DesiPower

Lifer
I just put together a new SB box. Config is at the end of the post. Everything looks good, I can get into the BIOS and everything, no issues. I did not change anything in the BIOS just the boot priority, making DVD first then the HDDS. Computer spins up, goes to the DVD drive, starts loading XP installer. Says copying files, copies for about a minute, then says Starting Windows, this is the point where I expect to see the HDD lineup, asking me on which one want to install and stuff... but instead BSOD...

I have 1 HDD and 1 SSD in the box, I disconnected each one of them, one at a time and rebooted, but same result, BSOD everytime.. please help...

If I could read your minidumps I could possibly get a read out on the probable cause. Unfortunately these forums don't provide for attachments.

I know TechSpot has a very active BSOD forum. For what it is worth here is code with definition.

0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
Windows lost access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes: Installing incorrect device drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware, or a virus.

I do have a question though: Why XP?

You most likely need to put your drive controller into IDE mode, otherwise you need the F6/floppy drivers for the disk controller. On the download page for your motherboard, under the SATA section is the Intel drivers which say they can "Make Intel AHCI/RAID Driver Disk for Windows 32/64bit XP & 32/64bit Vista & 32/64bit 7." You just need to find the drivers designed to work for floppy/Windows installation purposes (sometimes there is a tool provided that will create the floppy for you).

XP has trouble with new-fangled SATA controllers and thus needs you to set the controller to a mode it can understand or give it the drivers so it can properly communicate with it and find your hard drives. This was a problem a few years ago when people were trying to install XP on Vista laptops, which usually required finding the proper SATA driver - otherwise, this same BSoD would occur.

I also have to ask why you're using XP, because it is almost certain that Win7 would not have this issue.

Why XP? well, budget is the only reason. I was on a specific budget for this built and I was torn between SSD and Win 7, I could afford only one and I choose SSD... I guess I made a mistake. My previous built was on a 945 775 mobo, all SATA drives, that one did not have any problems with XP, so I never bothered checking.

I would most definitely like the try the proper drive suggestion as suggested by nitrous9200 but the question is, how do I do it? do I need to modify the Win XP installer? As I mentioned before its a brand new system everything is right out of the box. Due to the same reason I am not sure how I can access the memory dump as suggested by Ultralight, the two drives in my system are unformulated brand new drives.

I did read somewhere that the BIOS might have virus protected MBR, is that a possibility? I don't think I saw that option in the BIOS of this mobo, but I will try again.
