Why does everyone care so much about ridiculously high resolutions when everything looks fine at 1024x768?

LOL, you obviously are still using a 14 or 15 inch screen 😛

When you start going 20 inches or above 1024x768 looks like sh!t.

Why do you care so much about everyones resolution gaming preferences?

Because I don't know why you would want to sacrifice performance for a very slight boost in IQ (assuming you're playing on a normal monitor). That Westinghouse is kickass, m21s! I can see why he would want the higher resolutions, but I know alot of people who play on normal monitors and aren't satisfied with less than 1600x1200, which is ridiculous. It doesn't make that much of a difference, you just can't see the user interface. That's all I notice.

It's jsut personal preference. I think 1024x768 looks like absolute crap.

I haven't used 1024x768 since my 17in CRT and GeForce 2 GTS.

If oyu think 1024768 looks fine, then sae some money and buy yourself a 7600GT

When you start getting into the more detailed games there is a big difference between 1024x768 & 1600x1200.

And honestly with a decent machine you'll only be sacrificing a few frames/second. Nothing that should hurt your ability to play the game (what's the difference between 75 fps and 80 fps...)

Hmm, good points. I'm going to be getting a 7950GT, just because I want something that will last me longer than the 7600. The 7950 will probably play more games that will come out in the future. The only thing I like at 12x9 res is my desktop. In games, I can't see the interface at all, and it's completely unplayable. You kinda need to see your HUD in Quake 4...

Well look at it this way; if your happy to game at 1024x768, then a high end card will last you years.

m21s: Thats an awesome display, i bet your well proud of that bad boy?

The higher the resolution, the more points make up the edges of polygons. Combined with some AA, it looks ultra smooth. You may want to check your vision...

Visions fine; 20/20. Believe me, if I saw any discrepancies in my vision, i'd get to an eye doctor immediately. It's just that on my friends 7900GTX SLi rig (not mine, mine can hardly run 1600x1200 ANYTHING.), 10x7 and 16x12 look just about the same. Sure, it looks a somewhat smoother, but not for the hit on performance. He loses about ~15 fps on Oblivion at 16x12 from 12x10, and you can definitely notice the change in performance, but not in the IQ.

Take screenies of both. That's what I did when I finally got a card powerful enough enough to run HL2 and Far Cry with AA and then you'll se a difference 😉

I can't; not at my friends house.
Believe me, my X600 can't truly run things on max because of the old shader models on it; wouldn't do it justice.
I love my friends comp, i'll take screenshots over there next time we hang out. It's just that when you're playing, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference except for the FPS hit.

1600x1200 looks 10X better than 1280x1024 by my standards, assuming you have a good monitor. The textures have much finer detail and small geometry like hair and clothing look better.

Your friend's monitor, which is obviously a CRT, must be crap. If it's all blurry then every resolution will look bad, so the problem is with his monitor.

No, my friend has a real nice 30" LCD.... =( I've just got this 21" CRT here. I'm gonna AIM him and tell him to send me some screens of diff. reses so I can compare them.

Okay, he took pics at 8x6, 10x7, 12x10, and 16x12. I can see the differences in all of them, but from 12x10 to 16x12 it doesn't make too much of a difference. All I notice is that character model textures look sharper, and the lighting looks a little bit crisper. I guess it all depends on your setup....

1024x768 is low resolution mush and that's putting it mildly.

I'm gonna AIM him and tell him to send me some screens of diff. reses so I can compare them.
This won't work except to show the extra pixels you're missing. The only way to test sharpness (etc) it is to actually try the resolutions in the game.

Maybe his monitor is actually too big... 1024x768 (which is scaled down to boot) on 30"... the pixels must be the size of Rubix Cube pieces.

I dunno, I guess you guys just have WAY higher standards than I do...
10x7 is great- great quality, great performance. You don't have to compromise with that res.

Aren't you more CPU limited at 1024x768?

Why would you want to do that?

Turn up the rez, and let your GPU do what it is supposed to!

Dude, try playing FEAR on an X600...
I have the life OCed out of it, and I can still only pull low-medium settings at 10x7 comfortably.
