resolution won't change

I have a 2.4GHz Celeron d845gvsr motherboard with an XP SP3 OS. Because of a problem a friend had to reinstall the OS. The resolution was stuck at 640*480 with 8 bit color and he couldn't fix it so he put in a Nvidia GForce 2 mx 400/400 video card-fixed resolution problem. I wanted original problem fixed so I downloaded motherboard chipset drivers from Intel as another forum had suggested. I installed using its installer (not device manager) and I now have Intel HD extreme graphics (w/ icon in control panel that won't open ). I no longer have the original Intel 8210 motherboard graphics listed in device manager. Still no resolution change. Which graphics is better? About half the time when I try to open control panel I get an error message that says windows explorer needs to close because of a problem but I didn't ever open it! How should I proceed?

Sorry it didn't fix it. The Intel graphics icon disappeared from control panel. I believe its always been there but I have an exclamation point/yellow triangle at AVC device in device manager (code 10-device cannot start)- I never have figured that out exactly. Screen saver, desktop wallpaper change fine. Hope you're not out of ideas. If you need any more info let me know. thanks a lot
