Resizing images to different aspect ratios

I take pictures at very high resolutions (2560x1920). However, I have a widescreen monitor and the pictures become distorted when I make them my background. Does anyone know of a programme that will automatically resize a picture by shaving off a bit of the top and bottom?

You can use Irfanview to crop images to the right ratio.

if all you want to do is crop, then jpegcrops is it http://ekot.dk/programmer/JPEGCrops/
(but get irfanview anyway for additional functions as well)
