Resizing Hard Drive

Well, I'm going to install Linux Mandrake 8.1 over Win 98se, and my brother said that I'll have to resize my hard-drive. So, how do I do this?

Also, my video card doesn't have any linux drivers. This means I only lose 3D capabilities. If that's it, then shouldn't I be able to play Civilization III? It's purely a 2D game.

Your best bet is to use "partition magic" to splice your Hard Drive into two and put linux on the second partition, and you don;t really need more than 1 gb for the linux partition... 2 gb if you want to be safe... then you can have a dual boot machine... so you can still play your games using windows... otherwise you'll have to run "wine" under linux to emulate windows and i don't know if it will be able to run your windows compatible games under linux. You know that windows software (win32) do not run natively under linux right...
As for your video card, you have to look up the compatibility list under your distribution of linux to see if your vid card is supported... if not, you can always use generic svga drivers for your linux GUI..

Heard of partitions, but how do I make them. After I install linux will it give me an option to do this, or what?

That's cool. I'm only using a little over 4Gb for Windows. That's mostly because I only recently put this computer together and haven't installed much.

bump. Just need to know HOW to partition my hard drive, is there an option when I install another OS, in this case Mandrake 8.1, or do you have to do it another way.

What I need to know:
1) How do I make partition? After I install Mandrake, will it give me an option to, or what?
2) Will Civilization III work? I can always test this on my own, but I'm just wondering

I recommend doing a search on this topic, as it has been covered many times.

Read your Linux disc's readme on installing and you will find out how to make your partitions if clean HD. Otherwise, search for partitions here and anything that mentions Partition Magic and linux.

Civ III won't work natively in Linux but you can get an emulator like WINE that will run Win apps. Linux experts here would be able to tell you your chances of getting this running much more accurately than me but it's worth a shot at least.

Seems good. I just typed "partition" into the search box and a lot of stuff came up, I'm sure at least one of them will have what I want.

Partition Magic works reliably if you are ready to pay some 60 bucks. For free candidates there fips, gnu parted....

If you have a lot of files lying around on your hard disk, do a speeddisk would really help PM to work.
