Resistor Fun

Checking resistors for an upcoming headphone amp build and came across this:

Never seen a Vishay resistor mislabeled or this far off. Please no comments on the shi**y multimeter. 😀

Got it from Mouser.

In that case, (presumably) it is a VERY rare, faulty or mis-labeled component. Assuming the meter has read the resistor value correctly.

I believe there is a 499 Ohms value version, which this may have got mixed up with on the production line, by mistake or something.

Or they could even be (VERY rare) fakes, which have entered the (apparently genuine) supply chain ?

If you are worried, you could try contacting mouser ?
(But best to confirm with another multimeter and/or use a known resistor value and check it reads about the correct value, first).

I have confirmed it with another multimeter. The cheapo meter was handy when I took the picture. I've been using Vishay RN resistors for years and had never come across anything like this. I got more resistors coming from Mouser. I'm keeping this unicorn for my collection.

Vishay is a pretty well known brand for precision resistors IIRC, did all of them measure bad or jsut that one? Could very well be some odd mix up or defect. If you bought from Mouser/Digikey I doubt the fake stuff would make it there. At least I would hope not.

Mislabeled, it happens...

I agree.

I was jumping onto the "fake" band wagon, because (originally), I did not know where they were purchased. (So thought ebay etc, was possible).

Since it is from a reliable source, it is much more likely it is a mistake, rather than fakes.

Yes, it is a bit like receiving a $1 bill, with a serious mistake, but which is GENUINE.

They can be worth a fortune to some collectors!

Somebody probably picked it up off of the floor and put it into the wrong container before the labeling process. Maybe they were cleaning up quick before the boss came through.

I think it's a mislabeled part. I would expect a counterfeit part to be off-spec by a couple of percentage points, but not that far off.

My goodness, what kind of nerd am I to be all excited about a weird resistor.

As you can see in this video, resistor manufacturing is super high tech and errors are impossible.

Ha! I've used TE Connectivity branded resistors that were made in India. They were actually quite good, though they looked hand made. And they were. I'll put up a picture later when I get home.

They were on the line output of an amp that I built.[/edit]
