Just tell them that you were not looking and it is an opportunity that just fell on your lap. You gave it some thought and decided that it was interesting enough to look into. After talking to them, you realized that you want to move on and try something new.

Thank them for the job and the experience and be done with it...


But what the hell, it is your life, and if you are not happy you owe no one and explanation. Just lie to them, but be diplomatic. It is really not all that difficult.

Yes. it makes perfect sense. Please take 5 mins and google the topic and get back to me. Here's one for starters:

80% of people who accept counter offers leave within 6 months.
But they leave with a fatter wallet. ;)

the way i see it, if they can let you go for any reason, then they should expect the same from you. i would just tell them its personal and you would not like to discuss it.

If they ask, there's no harm in being honest, especially if they offer (and make good) more money or a different position within an organization that you like. OTOH, if you don't like them, say whatever you want; like I said, no harm in being honest there either--it feels good to tell the boss to go to hell. They might just let you go early and pay you two weeks salary anyway--BONUS!

worst case scenario, you burn a bridge, but even that's pretty unlikely.

I totally burned my last office and am doing pretty well after the fact :) I gave 3 days notice (called out sick on the second day), didn't train my replacement, and told them flat out that I was quitting because they chose someone totally incompetant over me for a promotion. about a month later, 75% of my former department (including the person who got the promotion) was laid off :D
