Hi,

Built a new system last week, but had to send my brand new motherboard back to MSI, thanks to their online BIOS flash utility.
The CPU cooler I got (a Cooler Master, if it matters) had one of those square blocks of pre-applied thermal grease on it.
When I put everything back together, should I clean that off the cooler and processor and apply fresh thermal compound? If so, what's the best way to clean the pre-applied stuff off?

Thanks in advance.

Fresh is better and artic silver is the preferred compound.

Goo Gone or finger nail polish remover (the acetone part does the job).

You can also use rubbing alcohol. 99% is better, but 70% is easier to get (in my experience anyhow, I hardly ever see 99%) and it works just as good. Make sure whatever you use dries completely before reapplying anything. I personally like alcohol because I know it dries quickly.

Rubbing alcohol is better used after the solvent to clean the base of any leftover imperfections.

You should put fresh on it and I agree Artic Silver is the best. Nail polish remover works great to remove the old.
