You may not want to read this if you like chicken nuggets.

Recently, Mississippi researchers found out why: two nuggets they examined consisted of 50 percent or less chicken muscle tissue, the breast or thigh meat that comes to mind when a customer thinks of "chicken."

The nuggets came from two national fast food chains in Jackson. The three researchers selected one nugget from each box, preserved, dissected and stained the nuggets, then looked at them under a microscope.

The first nugget was about half muscle, with the rest a mix of fat, blood vessels and nerves. Close inspection revealed cells that line the skin and internal organs of the bird, the authors wrote in the American Journal of Medicine.

The second nugget was only 40 percent muscle, and the remainder was fat, cartilage and pieces of bone.

Pretty sure that people who eat McDonalds don't give a shit about health lol

Sort of like trying to explain harm of drugs to a meth head

It's sad though how we really don't know what we're putting in our mouths anymore. Sure you eat fast food knowing it's unhealthy but most people would still like to assume that it's still food.

The best is when McDonald's said "We now use real chicken!" So they were basically admitting they used some fake crap.

I don't think the ones in this particular article are McDonald's though, the seasoning does not look the same. Though I would not doubt that McDonald's ones are like this too. Chances are if they have to advertise that it's real chicken it's because it really isn’t. I used to love those, till I had a bad experience, and now I can't eat them without worrying it happens again.

They chose not to reveal which chains they took it from. We only get them from McDonalds because it's closest. I would love to know.

McDonalds.....I've got to say, they did an excellent job with their marketing.

Chicken nugget? It had to have come from McDonalds. They simply do not exist anywhere else.

(McDonalds or McNugget were never mentioned in that article.)

1) I guess that's about what I expected of a chicken nugget. The good meat gets sliced off and sold for a decent price in the meats department. The rest of it gets sorted out - the higher-end "leftovers" are used in chicken nuggets and such, and perhaps for broths, and what's really left after that is used for petfood.

2) Isn't there a pretty decent quantity of good nutrients in those "undesirable" parts of an animal?

1. Knee-jerk reaction is, of course, ew gross
2. But people in third-world countries eat worse...and survive
3. Andrew on Bizzare Foods eats slugs and worms and stuff
4. It tastes good and you're going to die anyway
5. Pink slime is actually a Good Thing

I don't have the link handy, but someone posted a great article about pink slime and how it was actually awesome - it really changed my mind about the stuff. Like how the antibiotics prevented it from getting the diseases (e.coli or whatever) that the other meat got. It was a pretty interesting read.

I'm no nutritionologist, but isn't there lots of good shit in the other parts of the chicken? We tend to eat the muscle because it's the most appetizing.

Who would have guessed that processed food is full of fillers?! I guess you can't accuse them of wasting anything, and it's still edible. What do you expect for something on the dollar menu?

Every single story about chicken nuggets is prefaced with "you may not want to read this" and then they tell us absolutely nothing surprising. The chicken nuggets that are made by grinding up chicken meat are chock full of random chicken parts? What are the odds?

Really the only surprising thing is how much study has been done on chicken nuggets, and yet all they can tell me is they're full of chicken.

So they managed to turn the nasty tasting parts of the meat into something delicious and sell it for cheap. That's fucking awesome.

It's not like eating organs, blood vessels, and nerves is any less nutritious than eating the muscle.

If it weren't for these brilliant people who came up with chicken nuggets, so much meat would be wasted.

Seriously. What did we learn through this article?

Most chicken nuggets are made with the "pink slime" mechanically-separated product?
Most products made entirely of "pink slime" are going to have disgusting parts of an animal we would not ordinarily eat if presented whole?

This was news... like what, 15 years ago? I think the part that is news is the fact that anyone still doesn't know any of this.

I mean, blissful ignorance is great and all, but it gets tiresome when it is willful ignorance that has ignored what could be called history at this point.

Also - I'm not entirely certain you can say McD's nuggets are in this category anymore. They could have lied, sure, but they made a huge stink of the acknowledgment of the truth and the switch to all-white-meat chicken nuggets.
Not to say it's the best chicken you can find, and it's still probably cut-up left-overs, but it's certainly not pink slime.
You have to label it "mechanically separated _____" if it contains pink-slime of whatever animal type. If that's not on the label, and it's not a shady operation operating on the fringe that is possibly lacking FDA approval (McD's could never get away with it), it cannot contain pink slime type products.

That said, there are plenty of smaller chains that offer pink-slime nuggets. Most pre-made ones you can buy in stores are pink-slime.

Aside from the questionable preservatives that go in pink slime, the food itself is safe and a good hearty mix of nutrients, and a terrific use of the entire animal.
It just typically requires certain added stabilizers and preservatives that we could all do without.
Most of those chemicals can be found in many other foods though, so you have to be vigilant and not just settle at "I'll avoid pink-slime and be good."
Most are considered 100% safe, but it's still weird eating anti-foaming agents and propylene glycol. I try and avoid ice creams with propylene glycol, just because... but it's tough to avoid in daily life these days... it's everywhere.
It's GRAS (generally recognized as safe, a rating by the FDA), so it shouldn't be a big concern, but I don't like it. Probably more so because its one of the more easily pronounced common additives to food. :p

Doesn't bother me. Eff, I wish there was a McDonalds next to my house. I want some nuggets right now.

Unless they tell me it's toxic, I really don't care. Wait a second... deep fried potatoes or starchy foods are carcinogenic if cooked too hot or with reused oil. Ah, eff it.

Why do people keep saying that's McDonald's chicken nugget. The picture is Wendy's nuggets and not McDonald's. Anyone who doesn't know by looking at the picture doesn't know their nuggets.

I understand that chicken nuggets are essentially chicken sausage.

I like beef and pork deep-fried sausage as well.

Do you guys eat hot dogs? I put one under a microscope once and I'd say less than 20% was actually muscle tissue.

Unnecessary paranoia.
Where I'm from, we eat the chicken with the bones.

What exactly is so bad about eating chicken cartilage, bones, and organs?
