Research links pesticides with ADHD in children

child of wonder

Being the father of a 7 year old boy that struggles with ADHD, I found this research interesting. I've heard all kinds of theories regarding ADHD from it being a "gift," aggravated by food dyes, a calcium deffeciency, and many, many more. It seems, like autism, to be a bit of a mystery and, while often overdiagnosed and overmedicated, affects a good deal of children.

Since the study does not suggest how the children were exposed to the pesticides, is there anyone here that has a child with ADHD yet eats primarily organic produce? Do you live near fields where pesticides are used?

I will now brace myself for the barrage of "ADHD isn't real," "if you need medicine to control your kid then you're a bad parent," and "you should beat your kid to set him straight" comments from ATOT's parenting experts, most of whom don't have any kids themselves.

ADHD is misdiagnosed at times. My brother in law supposedly had ADHD when he was a kid and his mother REFUSED to put her son on medicine. They actually waited and found out he was just bored in school at a young age. He graduated Valedictorian in high school and has one year left in college.

I do not believe that there are this many kids in the US that actually have ADHD when you look at numbers. Is it a real thing, sure, but I don't believe the hype generated over it.

I'm sick of these damn studies. Every month, they come out with some study that links random shit to some random disease/affliction.

One month, bla-bla is good for you -- the next month, bla-bla is bad for you. Foo-foo causes cancer -- foo-foo helps prevent heart disease.

GAH! Eat foods in moderation and STFU!

Quick....someone call Jenny McCarthy...I'm sure she can find a way to blame her kid's Autism on this as well.

Well, ADD/ADHD (ADD, now, is technically ADHD Type B or something along those lines), even diagnosed properly with the Neurotransmitter imbalances at the root, is more often a juvenile disorder that diminishes with age. Though conversely, there is also a statistically important Adult ADD/ADHD that becomes diagnosable only in the adult years.

I still standby a lack of Omega 3s during important years as a potential cause.
And the lack of corporal punishment in school.

😀

If you want an easy bit of social study on the ever dwindling attention span of today's children (and adults) watch something like Finding Nemo and then go throw in an old Disney movie like the Jungle Book or The Rescuers. How boring do those feel now?

Pesticides obviously can't possibly be related to the issue at all. I mean, it's not like they're designed to kill living things or anything - there's no way they'd every possibly fuck up a human. Ever.

there is this woman environment-activist that now blames autism on woodsmoke from fireplaces and BBQ's.

there is no end to what some people will go to when trying explain something random that happens.

They're talking about organophosphates, which is not something you want to serve up a big meal of 3 times a day. The study doesn't mention exactly which organophosphate was involved. Nasty stuff.

The organic food industry is too messed up to trust that your food will be truly pesticide-free.

Interesting results, but the results are far from conclusive (pointed out in article.)

Single samples taken is a concern to me, ADHD being flagged by parents on their own children instead of a doctor testing each child is a concern to me, and lack of comparison to a similar study with organic-eating children is also a concern to me. Maybe in another 5 years we can get conclusive results.

Also, there isn't any causal link between consuming pesticide grown food and ADHD, merely a correlation. It seems unlikely that those children with higher urine concentrations of dimethyl phosphate got it from outside sources but given the high levels of variance (factor of 10 or so), but it needs to be investigated.

This certainly warrants further research, however (this coming from a fan of industrial farms and genetic engineering) to make sure we don't use pesticides that are neurologically damaging.

ADHD isn't a myth, it is over diagnosed though. I don't believe it to be something that is caused by pesticides. I think it is genetic and inherited.

I was "diagnosed" with ADHD when I was a kid and got the whole shebang of shitty meds. I was on Ritalin, Depecote(sp?), etc. I was most definitely not a hyper kid, and I was a straight A student so I don't know wtf my parents were thinking. I love them very much, but that was just a dumbass decision on their part.

Apparently there are kids that don't discover they have a learning disability (ADHD is one) until they reach med school and finally start struggling with their classes.

Regardless, congratulations on overcoming whatever disability (perceived or real) that you had.

That was my case, I "discovered ADHD" when taking foundation of CS classes. Prove this problem fall into NP... zzzzzzzzzzzz

I don't remember hearing about a pesticides-are-good-for-you study lately...

Where is Amused and others who will constantly spout bullshit about how it's all fear-mongering and hysteria?

Our food supply is getting polluted and worse every year. But hey, let's sit on our asses and wait until the studies come out to suggest it might not be a great idea to be putting these chemicals in our body. What we don't want is all this organic hippy shit, because let's be honest... that's all loony left talk anyway. Give me my Monsanto special and leave me alone.
