Research confirms the obvious effect of cannabis.

Current and former marijuana use: preliminary findings of a longitudinal study of effects on IQ in young adults.

RESULTS: Current marijuana use was significantly correlated (p < 0.05) in a dose-related fashion with a decline in IQ over the ages studied. The comparison of the IQ difference scores showed an average decrease of 4.1 points in current heavy users (p < 0.05) compared to gains in IQ points for light current users (5.8), former users (3.5) and non-users (2.6).

1. Seems the jury is out at a minimum, and possibly the opposite is true.
2. Correlation != causation.
3. Heavy use of many normally healthy items will have negative side-effects.

Your move. :whiste:

That's interesting, but that study doesn't try to show differences between use at different times and their impact. The study from the OP shows that use during adolescent years lowers IQ significantly, while use after adolescence (presumably after the brain development has competed) doesn't.

I really wish marijuana could be further researched and studied in an objective way without one group seeking to demonize it and another seeking to glorify it.

ROFLMAO

Yeah right, this is like the study the government put out decades ago that said it kills brain cells. Then, decades later of course, we find out they were strapping gas masks to monkeys and suffocating them with marijuana smoke to get these results.
Um, Ive seen weed smokers who do the same mask-smoking to themselves.

they found that those who persistently used cannabis - smoking it at least four times a week year after year through their teens, 20s and, in some cases, their 30s - suffered a decline in their IQ.

"It is such a special study that I'm fairly confident that cannabis is safe for over-18 brains, but risky for under-18 brains."

I smoked some in my teens, but never approached 4 times a week. I did it maybe a dozen times from 16-18. The types of kids who smoked weed heavily were slackers and skaters who weren't going to go far academically, anyway. This looks like selection bias. Most normal people start smoking weed in college. If you're drinking or smoking weed 4 times a week in highschool, your life probably already sucks, and probably would have without the substances.

What you're thinking of is just a glorified bong. The earlier study he is talking about involved constantly pumping smoke into the monkey's gas mask, thereby causing oxygen deprivation.

^ His post wasn't saying the smoke is bad. He was just showing some of the chemical processes that happen when you smoke marijuana.

Even the smoke isn't bad for your lungs. Yes, if used in heavy amounts and chronically, there is a "mechanical" obstruction of the lungs' structures just due to so much tar and burnt carbon being inhaled. There is absolutely no correlation between lung cancer and marijuana use (even heavy). The physiological effect of marijuana is actually to dilate the airways rather than constrict them (as tobacco does). This is why people who have asthma find relief in smoking marijuana. There are also studies that show people who have marijuana and cigarettes have a lower incidence of cancer than those who only smoke cigarettes - this is speculated to be caused by the anti-cancer effect of THC, which has been documented in experiments.

In other ground breaking news, alcohol may or may not impair driving abilities.

Cannabis use doesn't lower your IQ. Many stoners are stupid, but that's because of a combination of other things, not the actual use of the drug itself.
It's hard to show cause and effect when it comes to drugs. Alcohol obviously makes people stupid but a few studies have shown that people who drink a lot tend to be smarter.

"Very bright" British children grow up to consume nearly eight-tenths of a standard deviation more alcohol than their "very dull" classmates.

It's more than interesting, it's the complete opposite result from the study in the OP. That study is specifically for young adults, there's no need for a full comparison with adults. This study shows light use in young adults increased IQ by over double the rate of non-users. Of course heavy users were in the negatives similar to the first link.

The conclusion would seem to be light use is OK and perhaps very beneficial during the young adult years. Heavy use has a very negative effect.

You're right, the perception of it had to change to allow for less biased (both ways) testing. That's one reason I posted the NIH link with that tidbit supporting use, it's credible source for that side of the fence. If you notice the conclusion doesn't mention the positive effects at all.

These studies are just stupid and a waste of money.

Doing anything a lot can kill you or have negative affects.

Drinking water = healthy
Drinking too much water = water toxicity

Drinking wine = good for you
Drinking too much wine = alcoholism, liver cancer, death

Sun = vitamins
Sun too much = skin cancer

On and on. Waste of time and money.

At my University, every pothead was at the top of their class....and get laid more b/c of drug distribution.

Go figure.
