Research confirms the obvious effect of cannabis.

ROFLMAO

Yeah right, this is like the study the government put out decades ago that said it kills brain cells. Then, decades later of course, we find out they were strapping gas masks to monkeys and suffocating them with marijuana smoke to get these results.

Correlation =! causation.

Cannabis use doesn't lower your IQ. Many stoners are stupid, but that's because of a combination of other things, not the actual use of the drug itself. It has actually been shown to have neuroprotective effects and causes very interesting brain activity, and if you are familiar with the actual experience of ingesting the drug you would know that the experience itself is not some stupid, mind-numbing experience. When I smoked weed for the first few times my brain was constantly whirring with the most creative and beautiful ideas and visuals I had ever seen in my life... along with profound philosophical/personal insights. There are also studies that will show the exact opposite correlation of the one linked in the OP. The opinion expressed in the OP is really the worst part of the widespread public ignorance about cannabis - that this substance with such potential to manifest creative, intelligent experiences is viewed as something that makes you stupid.

I remember sitting at home on a Friday night after spending all day trying to overcome a technical hurdle with a new cms system we were designing at work. The idea suddenly came to me when I was high, so I made a point to write it down right then before I forgot it. That system is now implemented on 30+ websites we maintain.

Please provide scientific studies to validate your claim. The article said that cannabis lowered IQ of prolong users who smokes since they were in their adolescent. It suggests that cannabis doesn't affect adult the way it affect adolescent.

He doesn't need a scientific study to talk about the definitions of correlation and causation. Considering they cannot control every aspect of these individuals lives from birth to adolescence and beyond, it is not a matter of causation. In addition, this is an epidemiological study where the users can essentially self-select. The population is genuinely non-random because people who choose to smoke pot have made a choice. It is not random selection of a generic population that you then assign to smoke pot - it's self selection. Perhaps individuals who choose to smoke pot that long concomitantly are more likely to have a lesser IQ. Maybe those individuals who use temporarily and grow out of it do so because they have higher IQs. There's a lot of things that are uncontrolled for here. I'm not for or against smoking cannabis. I, however, AM for the use of research in a responsible manner, which this is not. One study showing a correlation does not mean everybody who smokes pot is instantly stupid. It is a study showing that a select population in a select area who already smoked pot and continued to do so for a prolonged period of time just so happened to have a lower IQ. There's a huge distance between this article and what you're trying to say.

It's also convenient that you forget to leave out this gem from a Robin Field (professor at Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London), "It is such a special study that I'm fairly confident that cannabis is safe for over-18 brains, but risky for under-18 brains." Lastly, it's ridiculous to base these claims on an article about a research article. I don't know about you, but I can't judge the quality of research until I read the entirety of it myself. It seems to not be available publicly through typical methods. I even have special access via my university and I can't get it. It seems a bit early to be making posts like this without having even read it.

Let me be clear. I think the general statement that heavy marijuana use while the brain is still developing can cause brain problems, is reasonable. This is true of any drug that changes the "chemistry" of the brain, even a relatively benign one like marijuana.

What I object to is thinking a CASE study that says CHRONIC, HEAVY use in ADOLESCENTS is CORRELATED with cognitive decline, is indicative of responsible use amongst adults causing cognitive decline. There is a huge difference there.

Look man, you obviously have an agenda. Your thread title says Research confirms OBVIOUS effects, which shows your bias against the subject matter. As I said, this is another study where the probably pumped massive amounts into their test subject to get the results they wanted so that moronic douchebags like you can go spread their propoganda around the internet like the good little cock sucker you are.

Taking MDMA can give you the happiest, joyous, and loving moments of your life. But if you take it chronically for years, you betcha you'd get depression.

That and most pot insights seem retarded when you sober up.

I'd be interested to see the actual paper(s). The BBC frequently reports things like "Scientists find Cure for <previously incurable disease>," but then you look into it and they're talking about some very basic research on cockroach ganglia cells in a petri dish.

Slashdot had a blip some time ago referring to research that showed using email reduced user's IQ more than marijuana use.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11949984
Current and former marijuana use: preliminary findings of a longitudinal study of effects on IQ in young adults.

RESULTS: Current marijuana use was significantly correlated (p < 0.05) in a dose-related fashion with a decline in IQ over the ages studied. The comparison of the IQ difference scores showed an average decrease of 4.1 points in current heavy users (p < 0.05) compared to gains in IQ points for light current users (5.8), former users (3.5) and non-users (2.6).

1. Seems the jury is out at a minimum, and possibly the opposite is true.
2. Correlation != causation.
3. Heavy use of many normally healthy items will have negative side-effects.

Your move. :whiste:

Damn, well played.

That's a billion times different than saying 'If you take x, you'll definitely get depression'.

Which is what he was saying.

Err, no.

"But if you take it chronically for years, you betcha you'd get depression."

Do you not know that the old post is still there or have you just smoked too much pot that you have the memory of a goldfish?
