I was just thinking today what has a better resale value? I would assume a laptop, but could I be wrong?

you can take a top of the line desktop and try to sell it in a year and not get as much as a laptop that is the same age and inferior in everyway.
 
Laptops. By the time a desktop has lost, say, 90% of its original value, the laptop will only have lost 60% or less. Three-year-old laptops on Ebay are going for 2/3rds or more of what you could buy a new one for, and ever a "parts" laptop that's a few years old can sell for $200.
