Is Win2k server actually needed for a hoke gaming server, or is Win2k pro just good enough?

Win2K Pro will do just as good a job as Win2K Server for a gaming server. You won't need the extra features of Server for that type of use.

Win2k Pro only allow 10 concurrent connections. If you have more than 10 people wanting to play together... Well not likely for home environment. Then you'd need one of the server products.

The specs of this server need an opinion from you guys.

MSI 694x dual socket370
256MB x2 memory
4U Rackmount case
p3 600eb x2 cpu's
Win2k pro
416K SDSL
15 gig 7200rpm maxtor ide drive

Anything else i should modify this rig with or denote?

the machine you have is great (actually overkill for a gaming server) with the exception of the net connection.
if you limit rate per client to about 8000...you can only get about 5 clients to run on the server smoothly before you start running into problems. depending on the game you can drop to as low as 3000 and get as much as 13 clients.
whatever it is you do...GL!

Yeah i see that, but everyone who will be connecting will have 90,128,144k and higher upload speeds from cable and dsl. So i figure 416k bandwidth for local friends shouldn't matter so much but out of towners may drag my bandwidth a bit down than expected.

The server might be a bit Overkill but i was thinking long term investment then again, what should i water down on the specs?

Now if i go with this configuration for the gaming server,

800 duron
MSI KT133 Master
384 or 512MB of memroy
15. gig 7200rpm HD
Rackmount casing

Would this suffice? I really wanted to get into the SMP system factor but it does sound like an Overkill. So i came up with that new spec above.

What about a bp6 with a pair of 366 celerons at 550? That's a pretty cheap alternative, no?

Yeah but the performance of those 2 celys would be the equivileant of that duron setup. The duron itself is cheap and powerful. The cellys have no place in the budget market anymore.
