Requiem For A Dream

so i've heard alot about this movie and was looking to rent it yesterday. I head on down to Hollywood Video and pick up the dvd, but on the front it says "Edited version". Now, i hear this movie is pretty twisted so i'm wondering how much is 'edited' out. I checked amazon.com and it says that there's a directors cut version. Should i just go ahead and rent the edited version or just go out and buy the directors cut. Will i be missing much? anyone who's seen both, are there any big differences between the two?

I haven't seen the edited version...
but i don't think they would take alot of it out.

Maybe a few extra seconds of the "ass to ass" scene

ass to ass...haha. I dont know, I own the director's cut but I've never seen the edited version. Definitely the feel good movie of the year..err maybe not.

i think i'll just buy it from deepdiscountdvd.com anyways. Only 4 bucks more than renting it. If i don't like it then there's always FS/FT forum!

Even though I bought it, I think viewing it once is enough... GREAT movie though, just not something that I would want to watch 3 times over. Enjoy it 🙂

<< Don't buy...rent.

I was not overly impressed with it. Glad I rented and didn't buy it.

Me too. I heard a lot about this movie, but after watching it I felt drained and mildly depressed (not being melodramatic - I really did). I watch a movie for one of these:

1) Entertainment value
and/or
2) Educational value

This movie offered me neither 🙁

I thought it was a great movie, but yes very hard to watch at times. I don't even what version I saw, but for $9, go for it.

the edited version takes out the ass scene. and all of you nay-sayers....i fart in your general direction!!! how dare you not LOVE such a masterpiece.

If this movie had even a hint of happiness in its ending, it would be heralded by all as one of the greatest movies of all time.

The only movies with happy endings are american movies that fit the usual cliche of movies. I was glad when I saw it to see a more real ending, something equivalent to some foreign films. The movie shows how bad life can get and how things become when you're under the influence of drugs and the fact that the Wayans guy didn't play his usual role was great. Compare him with someone like Travolta who always has the same look, demeanor, and style, how boring. Anyway, it's worth owning, just so you can show it to friends who haven't had the chance to see it.

I agree 100 % with your review !

The stuff that moves you or makes you think doesn't always have a happy ending.

I have to disagree with you there. Travolta is the supreme actor.

Don't listen!

This is hands down the best movie that I have ever seen in my life. Might not be my favorite, but it is definently the best. No movie has ever affected me like this movie. If you want pure entertainment, then sure don't watch it. What it does is give you a powerful message. It totally encaptures you and doesn't let you go, even after the screen goes blank. The movie is about soo much more than just drugs. More, it is about addiction. And how you can be addicted to anything. Be it drugs, food, attention or dreams. And how each addiction can tear you apart.

There is a hint of happiness in the ending. Tyrone has not totally lost everything, unlike the other characters. That is symbolized by the flash of his mother as he lies curled in the fetal position.

Its message was powerful but to me personally not so impactful. Perhaps this is because I've never been around hard drugs, always knew I never would be, and I never will be. I have never met anyone in my life who I know has tried anything harder than acid. To me the life of hard drugs is so far away that the message was just lost on me. Now, if i had a relative who was into heroin maybe this or Trainspotting would be good for them, but it just didn't connect.

I don't really understand why it was so powerful to everyone here considering most people here have never done hard drugs either (cocaine, heroin, etc.)...

Because it is about more than drugs. I seriously took a different look at my life after seeing this movie, and I can say for certain that it changed me for the better. And I have never done any hard drugs like they were doing in the film.

Ditto. I never thought a movie could affect me so much, but this is just so amazingly brilliant in every way..

It's even more powerful when it hits so close, I have a old good friend who's life was destroyed by drugs. About the ending, if it would have been a happy Hollywood "everything is going to be ok" ending, I would have teared the disk in million pieces, it would have completely ruined the whole movie.
