Requesting Tech Help - Modem problem (Inconsistent)

Okay, for starters lets just say that I'm running a brand new computer. 1.4 Ghz Athlon, 512 MB DDR, DDR GeForce 3, US Robotics PCI 56k. The modem is on COM 5. There's nothing on COM 1.

Here's the problem:
Every time I try to connect to the internet (yeah, I'm a dialup user, that's what I get for living in the sticks) I get the normal beeps and bloops, then everything stops and it tells me I was disconnected. This is before my modem sends my user/pass information. The weird thing is, SOMETIMES, it has been as frequent as 2/3 and as infrequent as 1/20, I connect. I get the normal beeps and bloops, then a low noise, then it does the exact same beeps, etc, over again. When this happens, I get great download speeds. It's just really inconsistent, and I hate having to spend 20 minutes trying to connect after a server burp.

I've already spoken with my ISP's helpdesk, and we changed some settings to what they're supposed to be, and that helped a little. I wasn't satisfied, so I called MicronPC (whom I bought from) and talked to a nice guy named Carlos who had me change one thing and that seemed to help a little more, but I'm still only connecting right about one in seven times with a couple reboots.

I'm really desperate for some help, because I don't want to have to send this machine back. I really like it. If I'm missing any information that you need to help me out, just say so. I'll really appreciate someone helping me. Please?

I ran my 33.6 modem on the same line and it worked perfectly. Unless the new 56k is more sensitive..?
Thanks for responding, by the way. I'm at wit's end.

v.0 (56 kbs) modems are a lot more sesitive than 33 kps modems. The new v.92 standard should fix that, though it will not give you any faster speeds (it's also 56 kps)

A couple of things to look at;
* See if there is an updated firmware, they may have release a more stable firmware
* You can force your modem to connect slower, it is possable that connecting 2-3 kbs slower will alow you to have a stable connection. I can't remember what the connection string is, but your ISP should be able to help (or just look arround on the net)

The second series of beeps seems to be your modem failing to achieve a V.90 connnection (56k) and instead connecting at V.34 (33.6). Line noise is probably holding you back, and throttling back your modem a bit should help with stability. This place has some great troubleshooting info. Good luck!
