Requesting processor recommendation for an ASUS M2N-32SLI Deluxe motherboard

Hello everyone.

I'd like to get some thoughts on which processor might be a good replacement for my ailing AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ (Windsor). I think she might be on her last legs. I'm running CoreTemp 0.99.5 and at idle, the core temps are at 78 degrees Celsius and 76 degrees Celsius. The recorded lows at 73 and 72 degrees, and the recorded highs are 86 degrees and 82 degrees, respectively.

I do intend to call AMD Customer Care and inform them of the problem. If I remember correctly, when I was reading through documentation on the processor, around 65 degrees is the highest recommended temp under load. So with the processor working at 7 to 8 degrees over that merely at idle, I think there could be an issue.

I'm using the stock fan that came with the processor, not doing any sort of overclocking, and I keep the case free of dust in a well-ventilated area. Thermal paste was applied to the heatsink and CPU upon installation. The case has two 120mm fans in the rear and one 120 mm fan in the front. I have to assume this is some sort of manufacturing problem, although I can't say for sure.

I really don't want to be without a computer for the days or weeks it might take AMD to ship me a replacement processor, if they'll even acknowledge there's an issue with this one, so I'm looking into purchasing a new processor for this board in the meantime. If I can get better performance out of a different processor though, I might just consider upgrading if the price is right.

The list of processors I can use on my motherboard is here:
http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/...=en-us&model=M2N32-SLI Deluxe&product=1&os=25

I know that I'm nearing the end of the life cycle for this motherboard and soon it'll be time to upgrade, but I had really planned to build a new system when SSD prices are a bit more comparable to magnetic hard disks.

Any recommendations would be valued highly.

Thanks for your time ladies and gents.

Great board, mines 3.5 years old next month.

While not officially supported the Phenom II 940 runs with the latest BIOS... there are still some problems with running the 945/955/965 (although some have got them working). Hopefully the next BIOS update will fix those issues and give this board a bit of a longer life :D

Check out the Asus forums for more info.

Thanks a ton for that information JavaMomma.

Dragon Age: Origins is pushing my computer to the breaking point... the cores are constantly overheating and the machine is restarting. I may have to seriously consider that 940, although the 965 has a good price at Newegg I hear.

2208 BIOS for M2N32-SLI deluxe
1. Support new AMD Phenom IIX3 715 (HDZ715WCJ3DGI) CPU.

or an Phenom II X4 running at 3ghz should work (920?), if it supports an X3 should work with an X4, but i wold only recommend lower clocked Phenoms II (3ghz) and an Big heatsink to go with it, as Phenoms make a lot of heat under load
