I'm looking at doing a quick trip to NYC this weekend with the GF. Our plan right now is looking like taking a bus to NYC and getting a hotel in the area. We want to stay in Manhattan but it looks like the hotels near Newark and JFK are A LOT cheaper.

Can you still get around easily to all the regular tourist stuff from those areas or should we stick to a downtown hotel room?

New Question: Any suggestions or tips? Any unknown places that we should look at?

What kind of budget do you have in mind? I would suggest living in the city if you haven't been there before or don't know your way around very well. You'll spend time on the subway/bus getting into the city that would be better served walking around and seeing the sights, especially since you have your gf with you.

JFK to NYC takes a lot more time than Newark to NYC.

JFK -> NYC at least 1 hour on subway
Newark -> NYC 20 minutes on the path train

There are a few hotels at jersey city or hoboken. They are one stop on train or ferry to NYC.

btw there's murder nearly every night in newark. turn on the morning local news and you will see. I will try very hard to stay away from there.

If you want really cheap, there are hostels that will offer a bed or the YCMA (you get a room but shared bathroom). You'll be in Manhattan without too much of the hotel costs.

The budget maxes out around $150/night so I can do Manhattan but I was tempted by equivalent star rating hotels for 1/3 to 1/2 the price outside of the city.

That's the kind of info I need!

Hostels are out, need a little more privacy.

My gf and I booked a couple of nights in a midtown hotel for 150-200/night. They had a "diplomatic suite" available so we got bumped to that. It was really nice, had a living room and a seperate bedroom, everything about really new, flat screens in both rooms. Hotel was called Club Quarters Midtown I think.

Also going from newark to NYC, theres a bus that you can ride for 25 bucks. Takes you from newark to port authority or grand central. Might be more covenient than the PATH if you're headed to grand central and dont want to change trains etc.

Also avoid this place called Hotel Carter. Never been to it but read horror stories on the internet. Google for it

$150/night should get you plenty...if you've never used it before, I would suggest taking a few swings at Priceline first. Use some sites like biddingfortravel.com and betterbidding.com to give you an informed guess. I used to visit NYC 3-4 times a year and all of my best deals were always through Priceline. A quick look shows that even 1-1.5 weeks ago, people were winning 3.5-4* hotels for <$150. You're a little late in the game, but that could help you, you never know.

I just got the Westin in jersey city for $100/night through priceline. Now to figure out what to do there...So far we have the empire state building and the statue of liberty...what else should we see?

I went to times square, MoMA, the Met, financial district.

I also tried out a lot of food places in areas like St. Mark's, K-town, Chinatown, Curry Hill, also a few american places like Carnegie deli, Peter Luger.

Visit Times Square, just to see it. You probably don't want to be stuck in there amongst all the tourists for too long. 😛 Then you can take a nice walk up to Central Park. Around there are the museums and there is even a zoo.

Make sure to plan for lots of time for the Empire State building. I was there a few years ago and the wait was long and NO air conditioning while we were waiting in the long long lines. Korean town is just at 32nd st and broadway if you like Korean food. They have good lunch specials.

At night, take a walk to the pier near your hotel and you'll get a nice view across the river.
