Guys,

One of my buddies needed a few ideas for his college project on networking. It has to be preferrably on Linux and should be roughly a 2 man-month project. Gotta work with/on the college LAN.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank!

Well, what I did for my sr. project in college was a security lab. We took about 10 sytems, 4 cisco routers and switches and set up diff. segments. We then proceeded to exploit the win2k server, solaris and linux boxes we had in whatever way we saw fit - it was a lot of work but it was also really freakin' cool. We didn't do anything super hardcore but we did demonstrate a lot of cool things (the really cool stuff was best left unpresented, hehe)
good luck

He could use a Linux box and develop a gateway appliance for a small business - Dual interfaces, run Squid proxy, some kind of firewall w/ NAT, an IMAP mail server, apache web server and a samba fileserver. Kind of old idea, but it's a good one. Just make *SURE* that it only answers to the Internet network to receive mail (SMTP, port 25) and for the www site - port 80.

Hows about setting up an SNMP box that will tell me a tad more than MRTG does...since it really doesnt tell you much at all.
