Request for advice on creating website

I know that this isn't the best forum for this but I was hoping to get some web development advice. My summer goal is to make a website for my mother who tutors students. I want the students to be able to log on and schedule times to be tutuored, see their bill, see their scheduled times, etc.

As far as my background, i'm just a casual computer user with minimal web development experience. (99% of my web development is ebay pages). I was hoping to use the "correct" web development tools to implement this project so that it can be a learning experience for me as well. (For example, I can probably write the whole thing in perl, using a text file to hold informaiton, but I might not want to do that because it isn't the best way to implement it). I was thinking that I would use ASP with a database...but I really don't know what all that means exactly. If anyone has ideas or links or books I can buy that would help.

Thanks

ASP with a simple database (even MS Access) will work just fine, but the one thing to look out for there is IIS, which is the webserver software that ASP must run on. IIS is well-known for security exploits so you may want to stay away from that, unless you're going to have a webhost somewhere (which is an important factor in helping you decide what you should use).

A popular language to code dynamic content with is PHP (used in conjunction with a mySQL db). The main advantage is that it's completely free.

My personal advice is to use Cold Fusion. I found it the easiest of all the dynamic languages to code this sort of project with. It's completely tag based just like HTML and the only learning curve would be to learn the CF tags (like you learned HTML tags). It easily "talks" to databases, and in fact, CF was created with database interactivity on the web in mind. The ONLY disadvantage is the cost for the appserver software (if you were to do everything yourself). HOWEVER, readyhosting.com offers that in their all-inclusive hosting package for a mere $8.25/mo. I have had them for a few years now and couldn't be happier.

As far as resources, I'm sure others will be able to give you some, but I know webmonkey was a good one when I did my research a while back...

Good luck. And as a shameless plug... if you need help... my sig at the bottom ... ;)
