I recently received an IBM Netfinity 3500 server for free from a friend. It is a dual PII-266, with 384 MB Ram, with an Intel 440LX AGPset chipset mobo. Can you give me some advise on the best way (cheapest bang for the buck) to upgrade the system? I'd like to keep the Dual capability, but let me know what you think.

IBM says the mobo supports PII 233/266/333 at 66mhz. Their support site says you can use a PIII 500mhz cpu, but it will only run at 333mhz, due to the 66mhz fsb (PIII core multipier of 5.0 x 66mhz).

Thanks!

Couldn't you put in some slocket adapters and put in some nice P3 866Mhz? Bumping up the RAM isn't a bad idea either, but it all depends on what you're going to do with it. If you can put some nice high-end P3s in there, get PC133 SDRAM from Crucial. (http://www.crucial.com)

I haven't worked with that particular chipset, but it's worth a shot.

<Bump for more insight>

Good luck!

LMFAO! Hahahaha. No kidding!

Is his last name Gates, Bezos, or Ballmer?!?!?! ;)

Jeffrey Bezos is the coolest "older" guy I know.

If these are slot 1s and you are stuck with a 66mhz FSB, you would probably be best off with the fastest celeron 1 cpus available, which I think were the 533's. I would go with those and as much ram as the machine will use. I have a duallie box, 2 celeron 366's at 550 (100 fsb) and one gig of ram and use it everyday.
