Republicans unable to throw out ethics rules

But Republicans did vote to change one key rule to require a majority on the ethics panel -- which is split evenly between Democrats and Republicans -- to vote in favor of conducting a formal investigation into allegations of wrongdoing against a member.
Well, they're still trying to protect their own.

I wish they had not given up so easily. Give a chance for people to really see what they voted for.

It did seem like they pulled a McCain there, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Maybe not so easily - in Tom DeLay's case the decision was unanimous (bipartisan panel)

Actually instead of throwing them out, they made them unenforceable.
Now at least one republican on the ethics comitte has to support any investigation of a republican lawmaker.
So republicans can block any ethics investigations. Considering that they all voted for it, even those who said they were against it, it will be easy to find five partizan congressmen to block all ethics investigations.

That's kind of sad. I like how they liken it to 'innocent until proven guilty' given that they would be blocking any investigation that *would* prove them guilty.
