And here's mine: you are an ignorant, immoral, scumbag bigot who deserves to lose your own rights for your denying others theirs. Tyranny of the majority personified.

I was adopted by lesbian mothers. I'm a fairly successful heterosexual adult with a college degree and a decent job. So, I ask you... What would you say to me about gays raising children?

If true, then that does change my perspective a bit.

It shouldn't, AP is a notoriously sarcastic heathen atheist and a blight on humanity.

Haven't the courts already done enough damage on the issue of gay marriage? If they hadn't tried to shoehorn this in via fiat a la Roe v. Wade, voters would have probably passed it via normal democratic processes before long. Doing it through the courts simply ensures it's going to endure as a culture war issue for years to come.

Well, regardless of whether or not the courts will incite more culture wars around this also heated debate, it still is at its core a legal issue. Religion aside, the U.S. must abide by its constitution, and California in violation as the gov. has said.

In order for it to amend this and resolve the civil rights issue, the gov't would either need to legalize same-sex marriage, or leave marriage to religion and only issue civil unions for all.

I fail to see how that's relevant...

hmm for a second I believed you.

No, I was serious in my earlier post; Jonks and I just like ribbing each other. In all seriousness, I am a fairly successful heterosexual adult with a college degree and a decent job who just happens to have been adopted by lesbian mothers at birth. I appreciate that seeing a positive example of this scenario gets you to rethink your stance on an issue which is obviously very close to my heart; if there's anything you would like to ask me, I'll answer as best I can with that perspective as my background.

If only those opposed same-sex marriage would have actual discussions with people like you, to dispel their myths about the "consequences" of it. I have a question, if you say one thing to the right-wing religious proponents of Prop 8, what would it be? It's always hard for me to wrap my around how to approach people when they have such different views from my own.

The republicans that voted him in, must be livid.

Also his calls for higher taxes must make them mad too.

So you are implying it was 100% Republicans who voted for Prop 8, and 100% Democrats who voted against Prop 8?

This forum is getting dumber by the day!

The issue was not by political party; it was based on prejudice, bigotry and paranonia.

You can fool yourself into thinking Prop 8 passed because of those, but as someone who supports gay marriage I believe that Gavin Newsom's incredibly stupid statement "whether you like it or not" is the most directly responsible for this turn of events. His arrogance and self-righteousness probably set back the cause for several years.

actually it was all of the above......

It wasn't 100% for any group, but this Field Poll shows that religion and education were major determinants. This site presented the results in tabularized format, which I re-formatted for the forum software:
  1. Survey Results by Party

    Democrats
    : Yes: 28% No: 65% Undecided: 7%
    Republicans: Yes: 75% No: 20% Undecided: 5%
    Non-partisans/Other: Yes: 31% No: 60% Undecided: 11%

    Survey Results By Education

    High school graduate or less
    : Yes: 62% 27No: % Undecided: 11%
    Some college/trade school: Yes: 45% No: 49% Undecided: 6%
College degree: Yes: 41% No: 54% Undecided: 5%
    Post-graduate work: Yes: 33% No: 61 % Undecided: % 33% 61% 6%

    Survey Results By Religion

    Protestant
    : Yes: 60% No: 33% Undecided: 7%
    Catholic: Yes: 44% No: 48% Undecided: 8%
Other religions: Yes: 30% No: 64% Undecided: 6%
No Preference: Yes: 17% No: 77% Undecided: 6%
This suggests that the dominant group responsible for passing Prop. 8 was in fact less educated Republican Protestants. I'm not suprised that progressively less educated voters were progressively more in favor of Prop. 8.

This forum is getting dumber by the day!

The above poll results and number of intelligent, articulate forum members opposed to Prop. 8 suggest that those who supported it who are among the dumb and dumber. :p

Actually, The California Republican Party had NO OPINION on Prop H8, and did not endorse or reject it , officially speaking.

Actually you're wrong. If you went to cagop.org before the election it said Prop 8: Support. Trust me, i know because i'm a registered Republican and I went there to get some idea of what my party was on the lines of. My mom did the same. While I voted No on 8, I know the CA GOP was for it.
When I went there the space was left blank. Funny how a party that prides itself on reducing government intrusion into private lives can find itself endorsing this intrusion into a private matter.
