The bill to help 9-11 responders is one Republican vote short in the Senate.

While Republicans were so busy protecting hundreds of billions in tax cuts for the wealthy, 9-11 responders were, literally, dying.

Shame on the Republicans.

And equal shame on the Republican supporters for not doing or saying anything to force their disgusting representitives to do the right thing.

Why limit it to 9/11? We should give money to every first responder for any issue. Cop gets shot apprehending a criminal? Why shouldn't we give them money? Firefighter gets injured pulling someone out of a burning building.. Give them money too. How about a paramedic that get injured? What about a regular joe who pulls someone out of a wrecked car? Does working at ground zero make anymore more of a hero than a first responder who risks their lives somewhere else?

Because the people of the nation don't want the responders who took great risks in the 9/11 disaster to have the health problems it caused to go untreated, as they often are.

While i agree what they did seemed special in the light of the event. All they did was their job. So i dont think in that light they deserve anything special or above and beyond what they normally would receive. But i also believe in UHC which would solve this issue outright.

Craig, please tell us why this bill required a 2/3 majority vote, instead of a simple majority (in which case it would have passed easily).

UHC doesn't mean everything is covered either.

im getting pretty sick of the 9/11 talk myself. like nobody else has ever had a tragedy occur in their life either?

I'd prefer UHC too, but at this time the choices are 'leave them with inadequate treatment for problems from 9/11 service' and 'pass this bill'.

These people (responders) were employed by NYC, why isn't their gov employee HC plan sufficient to cover these on-the-job medical problems? Likewise for any disability and life insurance?

I thought the gov plans were among the best anywhere.

So you're saying the NY gov provides "inadequate" coverage for their employees?

That's hard to believe.

I always stop and think before posting in agreement with Craig, but I think if the federal government is going to authorize payment for those killed, it should also pick up health care for those first responders who were there not just from happenstance, but from duty. It could have easily been them squashed when the towers collapsed, and seems to me that picking up their health care is a reasonable accommodation. I've not read the legislation, so it might be something of which I'd not approve, but in concept I'd say we as a nation pick up their health care for any problems reasonably associated with that environment.

Not all of them were. Some volunteered to help in a horrific situation. The federal government told these people that it was safe. In my mind that makes the federal government responsible for these people.

We fixed healthcare remember? No way that this can be an issue now.

In response to your snark:

We have to acknowledge the progress we made, but understand that we still have a long way to go. That things are better, but still not good enough.

And if you were just a little less ignorant, you might know that the benefits the bill does have are mostly not taking effect yet.

But hey, don't let the facts stop you from making a false cheap shot.

Thanks for showing how bankrupt 'your side' is.

If the 9/11 responders were in the UK they'd still probably be waiting for treatment. Your statement is so absurd its not worth further response. Don't you have some orders from President Obama to follow?

LOL.

Stop watching fox news.

Have you ever been to England or Australia or been a patient in a UHC system?

If not then STFU and stop talking about things you have no understanding of.

No, see in other first world nations, everyone gets first treatment, not special treatment depending on the amount of money the hospital can earn from treating them.

In the US, they got no treatment, in the UK, they would have, you may want to say that it's not the way it is, but it is most surely the way it is and denying it won't help one bit.

We don't let our veterans starve to death after serving their nation either, like in the US.

You can take your national pride about veterans and these heroes and shove it up your arse, until you start treating them like human beings deserving respect you should just say that they don't matter at all, no one really cares.

Ignorance is the only way to justify what he believes, see, they are non existant, those veterans that die on the streets.

Nor do the cancer patients without insurance... fuck them, they should have known better than to be born by parents who have no insurance...
