the republican party has pretty much decided that being intellectual makes you an "elitist," therefore somehow unqualified to run a country or run for public office.

can some of you explain why? what is wrong with having an intellectual with nuance ren for president? because he doesn't grow corn, wear overalls, and shoot off at the mouth, he's not "average" enough?

it's just ridiculous... the republican party really needs to re-evaluate itself. the jesus freaks and unintelligent bumpkins just aren't gonna do it for you guys anymore. your people are dying off.

Both parties have masses of uneducated voters.

The whole mantra of the democrats is to help the poor, the inner-city, etc. Not everyone who votes (D) is living in a nice loft in San Francisco.

I think if you watch William Buckley debate Noam Chomsky you'll see that it has been that way for a while.

yeah, but the republican party tries to paint free-thinking, progressive people as "elitists," as if it's a bad thing to be intelligent. that's what i'm talking about, not the democratic mantra or whatever you think it is.

while mccain was going around whoring himself to joe this and joe that, he and palin would both talk shit about how obama was harvard educated. as if attending the school of hard knocks in vietnam or the soy fields of kansas better qualifies someone for the tasks of being a great president.

it's just ridiculous and i don't understand why more republicans don't take offense to it. it's basically branding your party as a bunch of knowledge-hating rednecks.

Comments like those of the OP prove that Democrats aren't really elitists or intellectuals. They are merely wannabes who, in a typically insecure fashion, attempt to convince themselves they are superior by incessantly trotting out stereotypical denigrations of their opposition.

Whatever makes them feel better about themselves though.

really? i tried to sound superior by stereotyping republicans? i think you need to open your eyes and ears and figure it out for yourself. here's a springboard for you: http://fuzzmartin.com/wp-conte...loads/2008/04/snob.jpg

edit: by the way, i said that it was what the party was trying to do to those who were registered republican and it's obvious. that's not called stereotyping. the republican party is trying to stereotype itself and i said that i don't understand why more of you people don't take offense to it.

Further evidence that Reps and Dems have more in common than either would care to admit.

The problem is that everyone thinks they are right. The bigger problem is that, on most of these issues, there is no right or wrong. Since neither the D's nor the R's can understand that, they're all idiots.

I already have it figured out. What I've figured out is that you are blindered and fail to look at both sides of the equation.

Maybe this will help you figure it out, since it's a great representation of the elitism and intellectualism that so many Dems have exhibited over the last 7+ years:

elite =! intellectual

when the republicans throw around the term "elitist," they're framing the target as someone who's out of touch with the average person and not sympathetic towards their wants and needs. elite = thinking you're above everyone else.

George W Bush isn't an intellectual, but the way he thinks he's above the law and condescends to the american public in his speeches makes me think of him as an elitist.

QFT.

Obama was pegged as an "elitist" when he said something about clinging to guns and religion... it had nothing to do with him going to a good school or whatever.

Are you talking about a specific case or are you painting with a broad brush for the fun of it, OP?

True. It's just a buzzword, just like "Socialist". It means whateverr they want it to mean at the time.

Agreed. However, at least one D does understand. A past statement by our new President elect:

"In fact, I would argue that the most powerful voices of change in the country, from Lincoln to King, have been those who can speak with the utmost conviction about the great issues of the day without ever belittling those who opposed them, and without denying the limits of their own perspectives."

I realize that some people are still in gloating mode. However, once they finally get past that maybe they should heed Obama's words? Because they seem to be so focused on disparaging and belittling the other guy that they don't seem to recognize that their own words reflect damn poorly on themselves and, by extension, their party of choice.

Doesn't apply to me. I'm not a D or R. :p

Obama understands that you can't win over ignorant xenophobes by rubbing their noses in their own shit.

i understand that elite doesn't equate to intellectual, but people like frank lundtz and other republican spinsters don't care because their job is to come up with negative connotations for liberals with catchy slogans and words.

the republican party seems kinda like the borg.... they're REALLY good at becoming unified on issues and negative catchphrases for democrats. democrats kinda suck when it comes to that...

the point i'm trying to make is that the republican party keeps trying to make it seem like redneck > intellectual and it's pathetic. it doesn't make sense why republicans would go along with that kind of message.

Well, truth is liberals and Dems are more educated and better informed about politics than conservatives. But it's not a wide gap.
