I think mainstream GOP leadership knows this is a loser. This was one of the top 2 stories this week and Fox News Sunday didn't even discuss. Evangelicals/conservatives are sinking the GOP ship.
Let's just grab a popcorn and watch where they're heading. Unfortunate turn of events along with Obama's political calculation are pushing the GOP over the cliff. The turnout in GOP primaries are depressingly low, and you can imagine what kind of people (no offense to them) are turning out to vote. Couple that with their anger over contraception, they vote for Santorum. The end result is that a tiny minority faction among the GOP are taking the driver's seat for the whole GOP.
Hope the GOP will get their sanity back otherwise they will donate many congressional seats. Forget about the presidential election.
But then again, people might have learned a bit from 2010 elections. The so-called "Tea Party" movement elected many fresh faces in the local/national congressional elections. We thought they would work for small government, fiscal responsibility, getting rid of excess regulations, etc. But what has happened in those legislatures?
1. Pass draconian anti-abortion laws. (Vaginal probes, Personhood amendments, etc.)
2. Pass new voter ID laws. (solution in search of problem)
3. Pass unconstitutional anti-immigration laws. (police state?)
4. Pass gerrymandered electoral maps. (no surprise there)
5. Pass laws that decree "no-sharia" laws in courts. (Geez..)
6. Pass laws that are intrusive/offensive for social welfare recepients.
5. Etc.
These kinds of legislation swept across many southern states with the initiative from "Tea Party" members. Even sadder truth is, that most of these legislations are products of few radical right-wing lawyers in Washington, D.C., or elsewhere. For example, the Arizona's anti-imigration law was drafted by
this person (not an Arizonan), and this person went onto sell his drafts to many other states. So basically what it means is that while many state GOP is enacting these dubious laws instead of what they are supposed to do (small government, hello?), the primary beneficiaries of their works are these established lunatic lawyers since they're being paid for their drafts, by tax-payer dollars.
