According to Matt Yglesias, who clearly regularly speaks to congressional staff and some congressmen the reason was Democrats were afraid that Republicans would nuke the filibuster.

To me of course this is objectively insane because nuking the filibuster would be great for the country. The Democrats were on the right side of this both from a political AND from a policy perspective and they decided to throw victory away in exchange for nothing.
I was hearing talk that they'd nuke the filibuster and then repeal Obamacare entirely. So I think keeping some subsidies may be the better deal than no subsidies at all.

So they caved to terrorists? Nuking the ACA from orbit while pleasing to the craziest part of the GOP base would not have gone over well generally.

If the Dems f around in January when this proposed bill expires the R's need to follow through with removing the filibuster and then push through everything without interference.

Definitely not. First, if they wanted to effectively repeal the ACA they can do that for the most part with just 50 votes. (delete all funding for it) They didn't have the votes to do that in 2017 and they don't have the votes to do it now.

Regardless, the 60 vote requirement in the Senate basically means no more progressive legislation ever again without adding states or some big realignment happening. That's an unacceptable state of affairs so it has to go sooner or later. Might as well be sooner.

Thank you for once again admitting that the Republicans could have ended the shutdown at any time and chose not to.

I fully support them nuking the filibuster, I hope they do it! The Republicans REALLY don't want to do that though because the filibuster as it exists mostly only constrains Democrats.

So I say Republicans - GO FOR IT. DO IT TODAY.

Such an independent centrist that you only place demands on the Democrats, you applaud the idea of Republicans doing terrible things, and you don't place any expectations on the Republicans to actually do good things for the country.

The CR only goes till January, so it's not quite all the leverage.
Yeah but now Trump and Republicans know Democrats will cave and the holiday travel season will be over so air traffic disruptions will be less impactful.

I mean I know if I were the Republicans and Democrats threatened to shut down the government again over ACA subsidies I would be like 'see you in 40 days then'.

Republicans didn't seem to care much about any of the damage given that they didn't really budge on anything, even after Tuesday's elections.

Possible, although I really wonder what they would have done if SNAP benefits really stopped for an extended period and air travel came grinding to a halt.

Not possible to know of course but my gut says they would have caved.

The Republicans didn't even have to cave; they just had to pass their own bill. The shutdown was over the Republican demand for submission.

Caving and talking about senate procedure or doing it to preserve the filibuster is totally moronic and they should be out of jobs.
The senate democrats love the filibuster as it lets them serve the oligarchy and pretend the only reason we can't have nice things passed that the people want is because the GOP will block it since they can't get to 60 votes. Lets them play the victim and make the GOP the lightning rod. You really shouldn't treat senate democrats as good faith representatives.

The democrats have never had sufficient votes to abolish the filibuster, or at least have not any time recently.

GOP would have caved. There is no way Walmart was going to let SNAP not be paid a full month since it's effectively a huge subsidy to them. And no way the GOP would let the air travel system collapse in the holiday season since the airlines pay them good bribe money. Democrats wanted the filibuster to remain since it's the tool that makes the ratchet effect painless for them to enact.

Chuck the cuck.
Most of the party is Cuck Schumers, very few decent people like AOC or Ed Markey. Most of the good candidates get beaten in the primaries, like Jessica Cisneros who Pelosi and Clyburn just barely managed to keep out of the nomination in favor on the corrupt piece of shit Henry Cuellar in my house district (TX-28).

Voting on it in the Senate is irrelevant if Johnson simply decides to not bring it to a vote in the House.
They're not in any hurry according to their schedule.

I’m sure they aren’t - which is why Democrats should have made Republicans end the shut down by nuking the filibuster.

Then Republicans would own everything that people hate about this AND Democrats would no longer have to deal with the filibuster and could pass lots of liberal laws.

As a centrist, I assume you would be fine with this.
