"Sarah Palin: Primaries are over, GOP must unite
AP

By MIKE GLOVER, Associated Press Writer Mike Glover, Associated Press Writer – Sat Sep 18, 7:21 am ET

DES MOINES, Iowa – After helping propel several upstart Republican contenders to recent primary victories, Sarah Palin said Friday that it's time for Republicans to unite now that primary season is over.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee delivered a fiery speech to about 1,400 people at the Iowa Republican Party's Reagan dinner, the party's largest annual fundraiser. She noted that the general elections are less than two months away and stressed that Nov. 2 should be the focus of all Republicans.

"This is our movement, this is our moment," she said. "The time for unity is near. It is time to unite and make government work."

Her appearance in the state where precinct caucuses traditionally launch the presidential nominating season drew intense attention, but she found time to joke about it. If she laced up her running shoes, she said, the headlines would read: "Palin in Iowa, decides to run."

Palin has been coy about her presidential intentions and masterful at keeping her name in the news since she abruptly resigned as Alaska's governor in 2009. She's mixed political fundraisers and candidates' campaign events with speeches in which she commands fees as high as $100,000.

A string of Palin-endorsed candidates won during recent primary elections, including a double win Tuesday in Delaware and New Hampshire. On Friday, she stressed that Republicans needed to come together after a tough primary season.

"Did you ever lose big growing up?" she asked the crowd. "You lose some and you win some. For the sake of our country, America's primary voters have spoken and those internal power struggles need to be set aside."

She also attacked what she called a media establishment that wouldn't give conservatives a break.

"It's been made abundantly clear that those who hold some pretty common-sense views won't be heard," she said.

State Republican Chairman Matt Strawn said attendance at the annual dinner spiked after it was announced that Palin would be speaking at the event.

Palin is far from alone in taking early steps to court Iowa activists. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has made multiple trips to the state, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has put a staff member in Iowa and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania all have visits in the works.

President Barack Obama's spokesman said Friday that he believes Palin was testing the waters in Iowa for a possible presidential run. Press secretary Robert Gibbs said this is the time of year when potential candidates head to the politically important state to gauge the likelihood of a campaign.

Gibbs said it's clear that Palin can rally the very conservative elements of the Republican base and she may be "the most formidable force" in the GOP right now."

Even though the Teabaggers have been loudly proclaiming how they're different from the Republicans...and many claim that they're NOT Republicans...it looks like it's as I've said all along..."Meet the New Boss...same as the Old Boss."

Can't be a-lettin our diffurnces be a-splittin us up and a-lettin them thar Democrats take offices away from us.

Yep...Teabaggers...wolves in sheep's clothing.

Its very hard to win as a write in candidate, but every write in vote for Murkowski is basically one less vote for the tea bagger.

Will be an interesting race to follow, but in the general election in Alaska, they don't sling mud, they sling permafrost.

Why oh, oh why. It's like we get totally nutters people with a few reasonable ideas and then dozens of batshit crazy ones. Like this guy. (Joe) has a few good ideas, mostly on reforming congress. IE, make bills apply to one thing only. His earmark idea is a good, common sense, one as well. Then on other things, he's batshit crazy. Anyone who honestly believes Obama is a socialist is w-h-a-c-k-o imho. And I'm not even a democrat or anything.

Hahahahaha. I don't know why people get mad at these stupid Teabaggers. They are fragmenting the Republican party nicely. I hope more and more of them take over.

Go Teabaggers!!! The Left should praise your good work.

Actually, she might in this case have a real good chance of siphoning off votes. More of the fired up base comes out for primaries. Once the general Alaskan voters see what's going on with the T-party wakos, a write-in of a devil they already know may be more appealing then one they don't know even if there's a throw out the bumbs feeling going on.

They did vote Palin in for Govenor though. Hard to tell with people who have reasons to hide from the continental U.S.

As someone said wouldn't it be hilarious if Alaska ended up with 2 Democratic Senators

Senate GOP moves to strip Murkowski of Energy post

By MATTHEW DALY (AP) – 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans on Tuesday moved to strip Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski of her post as top Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, further punishing her as she mounts a write-in bid to try to hold onto her seat.

Murkowski already has stepped down from her leadership role in the GOP caucus and could lose her Energy Committee position as soon as Wednesday if the 41-member Republican caucus votes to remove her in a secret ballot.

The events marked a swift downfall for Murkowski, who in her first full term rose to be Alaska's senior senator and a powerful voice on energy issues and climate change.

A one-time favorite of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Murkowski was promoted to the GOP leadership last year, the only woman among eight men on the leadership team.

McConnell, R-Ky., once vowed to support Murkowski's re-election bid "100 percent," but he told reporters Tuesday there was a question whether it was appropriate for Murkowski to continue her leadership role on the committee, given her defeat in last month's GOP primary for Senate.

McConnell and other GOP leaders have been under pressure from conservatives such as Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., who attacked Murkowski in a fundraising letter as a "big tent hypocrite" and "Republican-in-name-only."

North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr is next in line on the Energy Committee, but he also serves as ranking Republican on Veterans Affairs. He would have to give up the Veterans post to take the top spot on Energy.

A spokesman for Murkowski declined immediate comment.

Meanwhile, Murkowski released her first TV ad Tuesday, a 60-second spot that explains why she is running as a write-in candidate after losing the GOP primary to tea party-supported Joe Miller.

"Thousands of Alaskans" reached out to her after the GOP primary and asked her to run, Murkowski declares in the ad. She says the state needs a "fighter" in the Senate and that Alaskans cannot accept the "extreme views of Joe Miller" or the "inexperience of Scott McAdams," the Democratic nominee for Senate.

You violate the union rules, you get punished. The national GOP's sole strength is that it mandates its members to act as one voting block.

The Dems would never think of such a thing, they embraced Joe Lieberman when he decided to run as an independent after losing a primary.

As far as I remember they, Dems, did not kick him off any committies. Maybe I am wrong but they let things ride out until the election.

Only after he had won the election, they viciously attacked him during the election campaign and it was even not certain they would let him keep his position until it became clear they needed to have him voting with their caucus. I am curious what exactly you find wrong with the Republicans not supporting a person who ran and lost in a primary? That is the way politics work, Republican or Democrat. Even Arlen Specter had enough honor to accept his primary loss and call it a day.

Your sarcastic point is totally wrong-the Democratic Party DID act 180 degrees differently. Joe Lieberman was allowed to keep the chairmanship of a very powerful subcommittee-Homeland Security-both before the election and afterwards. Absolutely no retaliatory action was taken against him-even though he was a keynote speaker at the GOP national convention and endorsed both McCain and Palin, despite his earlier assurances that he would only endorse McCain.

Insisting upon jackboot loyalty is a requirement to being a "freedom-loving" GOP member.

Can't she get enough signatures to get on the ballot as an independent?

I don't see why the GOP shouldn't "punish" Murkowski.

She's a lame duck, no chance in h3ll she'll be elected as a write in candidate.

She's running against the Repub candidate chosen by the people of Alaska. Why allow her a high profile positions to further her candidacy?

The GOP campaign funds will be going to the Repub candidate, now they'll have to use some of the Repub money against Murkowski as well. She's wasting their money etc.
