Maybe I didn't have his description correct. He was the person that was sitting at the desk in the polling place. You show your ID, and he checks a book to find your name is registered, before you go into the polling booth. He actually walked in on me while I was voting, but before I had made any selections.

Under any obligation? Probably not, but I don't see any harm in being polite....

At least most of the time.

I live in a deep red county, I have witnessed poll workers actually punch the screen for the actual vote for people that were either A: young and voting first time, B: or just plain stupid. Or C: trying to see who you are voting for. Because he tried getting in close on me, and I had to tell him I'm good I can work a voting machine. This particular incident was for Obama's second term.
On Obama's first term. they couldn't find my name. Why you may ask? Because the Democrat book of registered voters was on the bottom of the stack, and they were "surprised" they had to look there.

Edit: To elaborate on this, my wife and I did not go to vote together, (work reasons).
Anyway, she told me they were trying to put her votes in for her as well. (she is quite outspoken) but the poll workers all assumed everyone was a R.

I grew up in Detroit Metro area, no biggie.

Was hilarious when I went to Chatanooga (sp?) for storm work and the other guys were like don't go to any jobs in this area after dark. Like it was an automatic mugging. Everyone wants their TV back on, no one is going to mess that up.
