BREAKING: Univision Will Not Air GOP Group’s Ad Telling Latinos Not To Vote

Earlier today, ThinkProgress reported that Latinos for Reform — a Republican 527 group — purchased an $80,000 buy on Univision to air ads urging Nevada Latino voters not to vote. We urged Univision not to air the ads. The network, which heads the non-partisan Latino civic participation campaign, Ya Es Hora, has decided to do the right thing and not broadcast the ads. A Univision spokesperson told ThinkProgress:

Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting. It is also important to clarify that while Mr. Robert de Posada has on occasion provided political commentary on Univision, representing one of various points of views, he is not in any way affiliated with Univision. Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote.

Univision’s decision likely has something to do with the fact that Robert de Posada wants to tell their viewers that the best way for Latinos to exercise their political power in support of immigration reform is to stay at home this November — a message that runs counter to its own GOTV efforts. ThinkProgress did some digging into de Posada’s group, and here’s what we found.

To begin with, the group’s 8872 form lists the same P.O. Box number as the one belonging to the Admiral Roy F. Hoffmann Foundation, an organization founded by the chairman of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (SBVT), Roy F. Hoffmann. For those who don’t recall, SBVT was another 527 group formed during the 2004 elections aimed at opposing Sen. John Kerry’s (D-MA) presidential bid by distorting and misrepresenting his war record.

Yet another Republican strategy to keep people from voting.

I can totally understand the GOP viewpoint.

If there is no way Jose that a Hispanic American would ever vote GOP because the GOP platform screws Hispanics, rather than change the GOP platform to be more hispanic friendly, the ramaining alternative is to convince them not to vote at all.

It makes perfect sense to idiots and scoundrels.

Why isn't it in Spanish? And why haven't the Democrats given Hispanics immigration reform? They do have total control over Congress and the White House.

Unlike the repubs who vote lockstep fashion, the Dems are an eclectic bunch who for the most part think individually, each having their own opinion on any issue brought to their attention, hold that value in high regard and generally put the needs of their constituents ahead of the Party and are more bipartisan in nature.

Therefore, getting them to all agree on certain key issues is a more diffcult process than it is for the repubs. The repubs know this and exploit it....not saying they shouldn't.

As a result of their nature, there is no such thing as the Dems having TOTAL control over anything on the Hill. ;)

Bush loved Mexicans, even let 20 million of his Mexicans friends in the country on his watch. Even gave Gonzalez that AG job. You would think Republicans would get quite a few Mexican votes...oops ah that right. Racists don't like Mexicans. Gotta admire that sorta sincerity from the Republicans I suppose, as they back hand slap any Mexican that would vote for them.

Bush making Gonzales AG shows he 'likes Mexicans' like screwing a Mexican hooker does. He needed someone who would not block the administration based on the constitution.

Its not hard to understand at all, can Infohawk spell GOP filibister.

The other problem is many Hispanics can spell Pete Wilson and Jan Brewster, who are mot exactly Hispanic vote GOP boosters.

For anyone against this ad:

How the fuck is this ANY worse than the ads, handouts, posters, billboards, flyers, mailings - etc... that target latino's TO vote? Why is it that everyone but whites segregate to target their own race? So we can segregate everything (TV channels, groups, ads, etc...) for any group except whitey?

How does this not go back to segregation instead of "coming together as americans" ? Regardless of the idea that it is a good thing, instead of telling americas to vote altogether, you are targeting by race. Delightful. And people wonder why racism exists still.

Hear that sound?
Its Republicans nailing their own coffin shut.

Defending an ad urging Latino's not to vote? Gotta love Republican outreach.

Where did I defend it? I'm comparing it to ads telling latino's to vote - both are targeting by race. Both are equally stupid. I didn't defend either.

THAT'S a perfect example.
I don't think Republicans are even living in the same reality as Latinos.

Consider the reaction if the Dems ran an ad urging Christians not to vote.

I thought it was because Republicans refuse to commit treason a pander to illegal foreign invaders?

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

The Statue of Liberty, advocating treason since 1886.

btw did anyone notice I resurrected this thread from 2010?

And Republicans think they are just going to etch a sketch their racism away?
