Report Temps and PSU

Hi,

I've seen various posts about the accuracy of the CPU and case temperature readings. Are these temps affected by the voltages delivered by the PSU?

The reason I ask is that I've just replaced my ASUS A7M266 / 1.33GHz Athlon combination with an ABIT BD7 / P4 1.6a and on both systems the CPU / case temps were higher than most of those mentioned in other posts. One of the constant factors between the two systems is the PSU. I'll certainly check these things if / when I replace my PSU, but I'd still like to know if there is any relationship here.

Regards, Ian.

Your case temps can be higher if your PS is either poor quality, going bad on you, overworked or underpowered & overworked (sort of the same I guess). You didn't say what your PS was so only you can really answer that. Anyway, it is possible that your PS is causing the rise in temps but there could be other factors involved here like case ventilation/airflow. That too would be a constant in the MB change as well as your "technique" for applying thermal paste and the quality of the HSF's you used on the different systems.

Thanks for your reply. I realised after I'd posted that I'd left a lot of detail out. My case is not the best when it comes to cooling :(. There is no way to add an exhaust fan at the rear, so I'm relying on the PSU fans (it's a 430W Enermax btw) to extract the hot air. I didn't mention any rise in temperatures in my message, the readings I've been getting have always been higher than those reported here.

I still don't know if the voltage is related to temperature . For instance, if the Vcore voltage is used by the temp sensor, then does increasing it affect the temp reading? Which other voltage might be used by the temp sensor?

Regards, Ian.

Careful now, we are drifting ever so close to an area I am not that good in; voltage. Happily, I don't think we need go too far. ;) The Vcore voltage isn't used by the sensor to measure the temp. There is a specific, dedicated "thermister" (of sorts) for that. It really has nothing to do with voltage. But, upping the Vcore would most likely raise the temps on the cpu though. More voltage, (above the default level), tends to make the cpu run a bit warmer. I hope that answers you question.
