Nope. I'm buying xbox360 to play games, not to watch movies. When the time comes, I will pick up a HD-DVD player I guess. I don't really plan on getting all my older movies in HD-DVD format again just to have 2 copies of the same movie. I think it will take me a while to get into the whole HD-DVD thing.

But who knows, I might get a HD-DVD player as soon as they come out 😀. But that won't make me wait to get an xbox 360. I love games and thats why I'm buying the 360, to game, not watch movies.

Plus since Xbox supports HDTV, the size of movies, textures are going to be using much space on the game media

May be they would have HD-DVD games soon. In that case, it would be very unfair to early adoptors

naw, space isn't an issue. most xbox games barely use all the single layer. and heck, pc games are made for hd resolutions now and the games fit on less then a dvd most of the time..let alone a dual layer dvd. its still a console anyways, textures i don't think they will go too nuts on

20Gb is MORE than enough. Hell, I have a modded xbox and I still have the retail drive in there which has a 4.5gb partition for me to use and I haven't had a problem using just that partition. 20Gb, for a console, is MORE than enough.

whats going to happen w/the pS3 and the HD thing is the same thing that happened w/the PS2 and the HD. only a few games will take advantage of it, making it not even necessary. if it's not a standard in the ps3, then developers aren't going to take advantage of it becuase they won't be sure if the end user even has one or not.

and mark my words ... online gameplay on consoles is where the future of consoles is going, and THAT is why xbox360 is going to win this generations console war ... because they have the online gaming thing down pat w/xbox live.

I'm just talking about how xbox live software is stored on the hard drive, and atleast they can update it. w/out having online software stored on some sort of upgradeable storage, sony has to be perfect w/their first release of the online gaming software. but then again, they might have some kind of 512mb flash memory in the ps3 that is going to store the online service there, but i don't know too much about the details of the ps3.

Yep. People seem to forget that online content is going to be the cornerstone of the Xbox 360, and home theaters in general. If the Xbox online capabilities are implemented as the hype suggests, MS will win this round on the console wars.

It's not a surprise that on a computer tech forum, there's a bunch of Xbox lovers. I don't want to play console games online because I'm privy to the fact that kb/mouse is infinitely more robust than using a thumbstick, no matter what type of game you're playing (save sports and console RPGs). I don't think online gaming is as big as the industry makes it out to be. Halo is the only online console game that I even know of where a significant number of people play online, and it still can't match PC online gaming.

I own PS2 and Xbox and my PS2 has received hundreds of hours more use. I will be getting both PS3 and Xbox360. Maybe my usage will change? Who knows. I don't think the hard drive is that big of an issue.

its all about the simplicity. sure, you can play a game on a PC easily, IF you've been doing it for ages. but what is easier.

installing a PC game from 3 cds, configuring your video card, configuring your keys on your keyboard or gamepad, configuring your network stuff, loading up the game and playing on a 19" monitor.

or

turning on a 50" DLP, putting a game in, pressing power, and you are playing.

consoles are just so much simpler to play for the average person. playing on a tv is a lot more "approved" by the masses and is much simpler for the majority of people. spending $300 on a console is much easier than spending $1000+ on a top of the line PC.

the ONLY games that control better on PC are FPS and RTS. the rest play 10x better on a console - sports, adventure, rpg, racing, party games, etc. and the auto aim assist in halo 2 really helps with the aiming ... a lot, compared to the other games w/out any assist that makes precise shots hard to get.

exactly. if you read the latest interview (i don't have the link but it was posted on here) about the xbox360, they were asked about the whole media center thing. they are stating the system is like 90-95 percent gaming, and just a slight portion is geared for media center. they still are claiming they want it to be mainly for gaming.

i actually remember SONY claiming that THEY are the ones marketting a "Media Center" and not even a gaming system anymore. this was all E3 talk so I don't have the link for this one.

You make good points. The thing is, most people I know who own consoles don't even WANT to play online. Yes, it is a great feature. I love playing games online. But there are still too many people who aren't acclimated to competing that way. Everyone I know (aside from Halo people) who wanted to play games online now do so on a PC.

I guess only time will tell.

its a mediocre player, equal to those budget players you buy for £50. It could never be a fantastic player because of the kind of technology used in it for the games, the electronic crosstalk would tamper with the video signals, nevermind the fact its using a laser & assembly optimised for reading game data.

oh, and i wont bother getting either a PS3 or X-Box 360, same as i didnt get a PS2 or X-Box......i use a PC, no point using a console when the PC does the same and better..lol
Oh, i do get Nintendo consoles tho for the Zelda/Mario games 🙂

Well thats the thing ... people aren't really exposed to XBox live yet. thats where the marketing and strategy of xbox360 kicks in. xbox live will be free for ALL users right out of the box to play on the weekends for free. this is letting users try it for free, then upgrade if they like it.

putting xbox live out there, for free, will let every gamer atleast check it out. this in turn is going to make a HUGE userbase for xbox live IMO, because I don't know one person who has played on xbox live that hasn't wanted to play it more. the majority of the people who know about online gaming as you said also know about it on PC, because thats where the whole craze started. but putting it out there for free is going to strongly push the whole online console thing, and will be the reason MS wins this time round 🙂

Bluray is no where needed for games any time soon, unless they include LOTS of video sequences....but they they can do that with the 3d engine now instead of video (Final Fantasy type video)

Some of Sony's recent decisions can, I think, be attributed to Ken Kutaragi officially losing his mind. My favorite recent quote:

"The Playstation 3 would need a terabyte of hard drive space. We don't need to ship PS3 with a hard drive because it can access network storage as easily as local storage."

Nevermind things like latency, cable length/quality, switch/router quality, connection speed, server type, encryption protocols, transmission protocols, etc., etc., etc (because we all know, of course, that GB ethernet or even 54g wireless are *every bit* as fast as, say, SATA or PATA, right? 🙂

My choice of whether to pick up XBox 360 at launch or not depends on the launch lineup and the actual official price. I already bought a new HDTV to support 360 specifically though 🙂

As for PS3, or, well, ANY console, there's no way I'll pay $400 for a console with no games. I'm betting that most of the world will agree with me.
