Some time ago, a friend in my office had to give up a Black Lab because his newborn is allergic to animals. So I took her in and gave Daisy a home. She was 14 Months old at the time.

Fast forward to this morning. Daisy is now 18 months old, and crazier than a sh!t house rat. This dog does donuts in the yard just because she is happy to be alive.

Well, this morning I had my 3 year old son out in the back yard playing on his swingset, and we went walking in the woods with Daisy after a while, I showed him some lizards, worms, bugs, and we even saw a garter snake, which I picked up so he could look at it. (Croc Hunter has nothing on me :D). Well, My neighbors who live behind me have 2 scottish terriers, which got off their deck and came running at us yapping up a storm. Daisy was off in the woods on squirrel patrol and running like a mad dog. My son turned around and saw these 2 fur balls running at us and he screamed. Before I could pick him up and yell at the dogs, I saw this big black blur, and saw 2 grey balls go rolling down the hill. Daisy then comes full speed back up the hill to set up for another run, but instead, she plants herself between my son, and the 2 yappers. Fur along her back is standing up like a sharks tail, and her tail is tucked, ears back and teeth are showing. She has this low growl in her going like I have never heard, and let me tell you, she meant business.

The 2 yappers started back up the hill after recovering from being broadsided by an 80 lb missle. They saw Daisy standing there looking like the hound from hell, and stopped. One barked at her, and Daisy made a half charge, snapping, growling, and barking. That was enough to send the little furballs back home.

Sean then went to daisy and gave her a hug and told her she was a good doggie, and that he loved her.

So, now have another protective dog who will watch out for my son, and my house.

Nice ... I like protective dogs that aren't aggressive more than they need to be. My lab/rotty cross is pretty protective of my pregnant wife if he feels something is amiss. I am secure in the fact that if he's with her, she is safe :)

That's a great find. Everyone should be so lucky. One of my dogs bites everyone regardless, & the other would let a stranger take her home.

hehe...my do is so hyper and happy to be with people she would let a robber in, jump all over him and lick his face.

she barks like a crazy dog when she senses people coming up the walkway tho....so late a night when i'm trying to sneak back into my house after a night out she barks and barks and barks and wakes up the whole house. lol.

I <3 my dog tho...even though she's kinda dumb and doesn't listen to commands. hehehe.

and to the OP: i love that your lab is so protective of your son. It was such a sweet story to read..especially the part where your son hugs her and tells her he loves her. /tear !!!

I had a Golden Retriever like that when I was growing up. Most easygoing, playful dog you've ever seen...unless she thought something was amiss with either me or my siblings. It's pretty hard for a golden to appear threatening (IMO), but she was able to pull it off.

Meh, big deal. What do the Scotties weigh - 10 lb a piece? My 50 lb pit/lab mix has scared off two 150 lb German Shepherds in a similar situation :).

j/k - sounds like a cool dog. I like dogs that are perceptive enough to know when instincts should and shouldn't be controlled.

After the incident was over, she went back to chasing squirrels andd terrorizing the lizards. Running 90 mph through the woods and doing donuts in the yard again.

Interesting that your lab would chase off the other dogs rather than playing with them. The only thing that my lab will protect is her food. If you break into my house and toss her a hot dog she'll help you with the looting, then go right back to sleep.

We have a Daisey, too but ours is Australian shepherd mixed with whatever jumped over the fence that day. Must be the name because she LOVES to run also - doughnuts, figure 8's, anything as long as it's running or jumping. We have a 10ft high pen that she takes a flying leap and climbs over. haha

It nice to know that the dog will protect your son. Enjoy the outdoors with them!!

Cool story. I've gotta admit I don't much like terriers. It's good to hear a couple get their comeuppance.

Nice story, Ulfwald! I remember crying while reading the poem you made about your last dog. I am so happy you found another Man's Best Friend!

dogs will always be better than cats. I admit she can be a pain sometimes, because she sheds so much. but she is coming into adulthood and she is learning what to do.
