Report: Michigan will not be in national championship game

Analog

Lifer
The Los Angeles Times, citing an unnamed source, reports that Florida has passed Michigan and will finish No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings, putting the Gators -- not the Wolverines -- opposite No. 1 Ohio State in the national title game Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.

The final BCS results won't be officially released until the selection show Sunday at 8 p.m. on Fox. But the bowl pairings already are set after an afternoon conference call among the various conference commissioners, BCS officials and television executives.

Florida jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 -- ahead of Michigan -- in the coaches' poll released earlier Sunday. The Harris Interactive Poll, which also accounts for one-third of the final vote, was to be released after Sunday's selection show.

For Michigan, the consolation prize will be a trip to Pasadena to play USC, the team that had been No. 2 in the BCS until its surprising 13-9 loss to UCLA on Saturday.

The BCS bowl matchups are expected to be:

National championship: Ohio State vs. Florida.

Rose: USC vs. Michigan.

Sugar: Notre Dame vs. LSU.

Orange: Louisville vs. Wake Forest.

Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Boise State.

Yep, they only needed to pick up 21 votes in the coaches and the picked up alot more than that (leading by 26 votes in this last poll).

I am glad to hear this. I think FLA played a tougher schedule and deserves the chance at the NC, even though I still would rather support the playoff system.

How can schedule not matter? If one team went 12-0 and played all crappy teams, how would you know how good they were?

good enough to win all the games that were scheduled.
There are already enough threads discussing this.

How one thinks of the better team must take the schedule into account! A team may be undefeated, but play totally easy gravy teams (i.e. Boise St.). If a school plays a tough schedule and wins most of them (i.e. Florida) then yes, one should be able to say they are a 'better' team even though they may have a couple of losses.

I personally think it good for OSU to play Florida as opposed to Michigan.

I was pulling for Michigan to get the bid and beat Ohio State. I believe that would be the death of the BCS. With this result, we will continue having to deal with the BCS.

FROM MSNBC
The early indications are that Florida will play Ohio State for the national championship.

The Gators (12-1) jumped over Michigan (11-1) in the USA Today coaches? poll Sunday, taking a 26-point lead on the No. 3 Wolverines, and a BCS analyst expects Florida to also move into second place in the Bowl Championship Series standings, too.

The coaches poll and Harris poll ? due out later Sunday ? make up two thirds of the formula used by the Bowl Championship Series in its standings. A compilation of six computer rating account for the other third.

The top two teams in the final standings, which along with the BCS pairings were to be released Sunday night, play for the national title in Glendale, Ariz, on Jan. 8.

Ohio State (12-0) has already locked up the top spot.

After Southern California blew its chance to play Ohio State with a 13-9 loss to UCLA on Saturday, Florida and Michigan were vying for that second spot.

Jerry Palm, an independent BCS expert, said he anticipated the Gators moving past Michigan in the computer rating. But even if the Gators and Michigan were tied in the computers, Michigan would need a 48-point lead in the Harris poll to wipe out the Gators lead in the coaches? poll.
That would very much go against the trends, said Palm.

?The polls tend to mirror each other,? he said in a telephone interview.

In The Associated Press Top 25, which is not used in the BCS standings, Florida also passed Michigan into second, but held just a three-point advantage.

The Los Angeles Times also reported on its Web site Sunday that Florida would play Ohio State, according an unidentified BCS source.

Hey I have a question-

Let's say that USC beat UCLA yesterday. Now would Florida moved up to #3? I seriously think that Michigan would of stayed at #3 and florida at 4. I feel like this swing is just do to people not wanting to see a rematch. I understand how much worse a rematch is than a new opponent from a practical sense, but BCS is designed to tell who the second best team is. I think its lame that so many people changed their votes just because they didn't want to see a rematch.

Strange.

OSU beat Michigan and they will beat Florida but they escape having to play the only team that could have beat them...thanks to UCLA.

if you're talking about michigan, i agree. however, you're delusional if you think usc could have beaten ohio state. michigan is going to tear apart sc.

That's what the BCS is "intended" to do, yes, but I think everyone will agree that the BCS "design" is completely broken. So it's up to the voters to try to overcome the BCS formula and determine the correct match-up at the end of the year. This year, it looks like they were able to provide the correct match-up for the NC.

This was not the year USC would want to play OSU. Save it for another year.

I know more about Florida because of the schedule they played. I am not sure about Michigan because they had a lot of weak teams on their schedule. At this point, I think Florida would perform better in a big game against OSU given their accomplishments than I would Michigan. But as I have said 1000 times before, the only way to know is in a damn playoff system.
