Report Clears Lance Armstrong of Doping in '99 Tour

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- Dutch investigators cleared Lance Armstrong of doping in the 1999 Tour de France on Wednesday, and accused anti-doping authorities of misconduct in dealing with the American cyclist.

A 132-page report recommended convening a tribunal to discuss possible legal and ethical violations by the World Anti-Doping Agency and to consider "appropriate sanctions to remedy the violations."

The French sports daily L'Equipe reported in August that six of Armstrong's urine samples from 1999, when he won the first of his record seven-straight Tour titles, came back positive for the endurance-boosting hormone EPO when they were retested in 2004.

Armstrong has repeatedly denied using banned substances.

The International Cycling Union appointed Dutch lawyer Emile Vrijman last October to investigate the handling of urine tests from the 1999 Tour by the French national anti-doping laboratory, known by its French acronym LNDD.

Vrijman said Wednesday his report "exonerates Lance Armstrong completely with respect to alleged use of doping in the 1999 Tour de France."

The report also said the UCI had not damaged Armstrong by releasing doping control forms to the French newspaper.

The report said WADA and the LNDD may have "behaved in ways that are completely inconsistent with the rules and regulations of international anti-doping control testing," and may also have been against the law.

how could you be that small and dope?

It is really quite common in Cycling.

A whole team was taken down in a sting operation recently. Ulrich's name was mentioned as well and he is under investigation, but there are no charges.

Lance never doped in his Tour wins.

EPO ? anabolic steroids

QFT... EPO creates more hemoglobin in the bloodstream allowing for a higher VO2 max. There are other drugs too.

Lance got high VO2 max higher through extreme hard work. He would cycle some crazy roads just to get into shape, and then demand to ride them again, on the off season. No other cyclist worked that hard.

He also would sleep in a depressurized tent to increase his efficient use of oxygen.

**EDIT**
BTW he was frequently raided at his home even in the off season (sometimes twice in a week). Where they would watch him pee in a cup and take blood samples. He always passed.

Also, he would have to take a urine test before and after almost every ride he road.

It was a smear campaign by the French. I mean look at how fast they backed down when Lance Armstrong got mad and said he would recant his retirement and ride in the next Tour.

I wouldn't be totally shocked if he did dope though.
i would be. how stupid would he have to be to dope when he knows how much he is going to be under the microscope?

There is a theory that his cancer helped him. The chemo broke down his body and nearly killed him (as it is supposed to do). When he stopped chemo, got healthy and started training again, he had control over how his body built back up. Specialized focused training from a trashed ~110lbs to a lean ultra fit ~160lbs makes for a machine.

QFT.

You should see pictures of him when he first started on the pro circuit. He was Gi-normous. 😉 I mean to be honest, he specialized in Triathlons before that, so it was no wonder.

BTW, I know a few MTB riders that ride with him now. Apparently, he isn't satisfied with doing Iron Men again, he is riding MTB now. They say he is extremely fast, but can't take turns very well.

Picture a guy going 25 MPH on rough gravel terrain, then on sharp turns falling over, getting back on his bike while other MTB riders are catching up, and shooting off like a bat out of hell.

I am thinking about getting back into MTB riding again because of this.

Figures.

Yeah, this didn't damage Armstrong one bit...

In all fairness, the French did find some foreign substances when they searched Lance's room...soap, toothpaste, deoderant...
