No matter what they do in an aggressive way towards the US gets them their ass handed to them. They may nuke some of the US but they will simply cease to exist and they know it. If they do then they are the dumbest idiots on the planet so what is the point anyways? They are communists so their stupidity is rather certain so you never know, only time will tell. There is no way they can become the economic power they dream of if you know how things actually work....think about this for a while. Let's first see if they are stupid enough to do anything against Taiwan....that will give us a clue. I am not worried as it would serve no purpose. China really can't do much without losing so they beat their chests and try to bluff....remeber when their idiot pilot hit our reconnaissance plane?

the chinese government has already downplayed the Gen's statements, so not to worry. they said it was the general's personal opinion.

Wow... a lot of people underestimate China.

Right or wrong they feel they are entitled to Taiwan. Their only option would be nuclear if the US were to get involved. They have no ambition to take over the US nor the capability. They do however have the ability to wipe out quite a few places in the US and why wouldn't they if the US attacked them.

I also think its funny that some people think this is just the ramblings of some General. If China decides to take back Taiwan and the US gets involved as promised the only option is nuclear.

Russia would not come to our aid. Superpowers are made by wars and both China and Russia would like nothing more than to be the or joint superpower/s.

As far as MAD it is policy to try to win a nuclear war first and it is likely both sides would suck up the damage before destroying the planet. If not that is what subs are for...........

sorry, i would have to disagree. i doubt the likelihood of a nuclear war. both the US and China are major powers- the two most powerful countries in the world. they aren't exactly stupid. I'm pretty sure both countries are well aware of the consequences of a nuclear exchange... even moreso than any of us can speculate. THey know that a nuclear exchange would basically mean the utter destruction of both countries.

even if the US is able to survive... can you imagine the devastation that would result from the detonation of a nuclear weapon in only ONE major city? everybody would lose, it doesnt matter who, in the war 'wins'- if you can even call it that.

i doubt the CHinese would resort to such a desperate and critical option as nuclear war- especially over an taiwan. Do i think they will invade? i dont doubt it, the mainland feels very strongly about the issue. but to assume that they will use nuclear weapons...ehh, dont think so. Im sure they will engage the US in skirmish if the US intervenes and goes to war with China, but again, Nuclear weapons is a rather brash option that im sure both sides would be extremely reluctant to use- because both are quite aware of the consequences: mutual, complete destruction.

China will eventually take back Taiwan. I don't think there is much to argue there.

The only thing that can be argued is will the US back up their claim of helping Taiwan. I doubt it but if they do China's only real option is nuclear. Yes you could say they could just fight back our troops but why tolerate the bombings that would obviously come with that?

What you said about the "one city" is correct and with policy as I understand it would lead to a reality check and resolution after an exchange.

One then has to ask themselves who would be more likely to absorb the first exchange and become the leading buyer in the world.............

If there is a nuclear war between China and the US, Taiwan can start an invasion of mainland China with very little opposition.
