WTF people, learn the difference. Some list gets mailed incorrectly and people one by one start replying all to have their name removed. Meanwhile, you have other people who do know the difference also REPLY ALL to say stop replying all. Helpdesk leads, senior project managers, architects, wtf. Completely comical... 150 emails.

EDIT>> Looks like some people also marked their reply all as IMPORTANT too. /facepalm-with-both-hands

Reply all can be quite handy when dealing with a select group of people who need a chain of emails to document progress on a job that they all share some involvement in.

As for reply all in the context the OP speaks, the sender of the original email needs to take a wiser approach to sending those emails. BCC for the win. If you send to everyone via BCC, and someone clicks reply all, they only get the sender as they are "blind" to everyone else.

You got it mvbighead, BCC, learn it, love it, use it. I wish more people at my company used BCC.

Wat? I use reply all for my consulting work all the time. How have you never had to have an email discussion with more than one person at a time? There are usually 5 or 6 people actively engaging in email threads where I work.

yeah the proper time to use reply all is when everyone else needs to know... plain and simple.

BCC has its uses but not good when you want people to reply all, like if you're inviting a bunch of friends out and you want everyone to see everyone's reply. Same in a business environment.

This happened with my university email account all the time. To make matters worse, any number of smart asses would REPLY ALL to the original sender to inform them how stupid they were to email everyone.

reply all is very useful for business...i use it a lot.
but there are a lot of times as well where people do NOT need to use reply all, but still do, and then i get 4567574546 unnecessary emails to delete. no biggie, but it does make me lol at people sometimes.

I use reply all for everything except lists emails. If somebody CC'ed or included multiple people in a business email then I will reply to them all.

This is a great case study for all who aspire to middle management. Teach your subordinates email discipline. Only send emails to the people who need to read it. Make sure they understand what "need" means, too.

Even worse are the people who don't use it, don't know it exists, or completely ignore the recipient info to see the email was sent to multiple people.

Email from me to 1 person + cc 5 others

Person responds without reply all

I respond to person + cc 5 others again

Person responds again without replying to anyone but me.

Repeat until I finally lose it and add a "Do you know how to use reply all?" at the end of an email.
