Replicating Baker's Yeast

Three packs of Fleischman's yeast costs about $2.50 here, and that seems like a ripoff. It seem like even more of a ripoff when Fleischman's is just giving little organisms a bit of sugar and letting them replicate themselves. Does anyone know if one can simply take a bit of yeast from one of the packets, dissolve it in water and feed it some sugar, and then dry it out in a few hours and be left with considerably more yeast?

heh, you could buy the finished bread for barely more than that. Is it cheaper if you buy in bulk?

yeah, you can buy yeast in bulk and store it in the fridge. lasts a long time. my father did that back when his hobby was baking bread

If you've signed up with a wholesale club it is. I've been using preferment techniques that allow you to use significantly less yeast per loaf (I measure out about a quarter of a gram for an 800 gram loaf), but it is still expensive.

1. get Q-tip

2. find skanky hooker

3. swab skanky hookers p*ssy with Q-Tip

4. cultivate aquired yeast found on Q-tip from said skanky hooker

5. Profit. :D

Heh, I was asking my dad the other day if I could do that. Usually you can't just take yeast from a very specific environment like that and use it to raise bread. Modern baker's yeast has been cultivated from sourdough cultures, which contain yeast strains particularly suited to feeding on wheat.

That depends on how long it really lasts. I'd like to buy as much as possible without being in danger of it going "bad" (dying).

lasts for ages. it'll have an expiration date on it, but that is only there to make you throw out and buy more.
