If you're tired of RENTING a DVR from the TV or sat company, you can get your own for as little as FREE (AR).

NEW:
80 hr capacity: $299-40%IR-$100MIR = $80
160 hr capacity: $379-40%IR-$100MIR = $128
320 hr capacity: $499-40%IR-$100MIR = $200

REFURB:
40 hr capacity: $83.34 (clearance?)-40%IR-$50MIR = $FREE
80 hr capacity: $199-40%IR-$100MIR = $20

NOTE: MIR requires that unit be PURCHASED by 9/30.

FAQ:
1) Do I need a subscription?
A: No -- it makes a nice dust collector without one.

2): Subscription fee?
A: $12.95/mo; $6.95/mo for each additional unit OR $299 lifetime each.

3) How many tuners?
A: One (but you can watch a recorded program WHILE you record another)

4) Why should I buy one? I can rent one from my cable/satellite company.
A: Yes you can, but add-up the rental fees. If you switch your programming source, you don't have to give it back. Also, after the warranty, you can upgrade the hard drive for more storage capacity. You can also do more, but that goes beyond the scope of answering this question.

5) What if Replay goes out of business? The box becomes useless, right?
A: Could be -- IF Replay goes out of business. IF. Your house could be destroyed IF you're hit by a hurricane (I say while typing this from HOUSTON). More to the point, these guys are owned by big corporate names. It's pretty unlikely.

6) Do these have commercial skip?
A: Not as such -- but there's a feature that's similar to it, and in most cases, close enough.

7) I looked at the website. Do the MIR's apply to the refurbished units also?
A: YES -- look closely in the upper-right corner of the rebate form.

8) Do they actually pay the rebates? How long does it take?
A: Yes. In my experience, 10-12 weeks.

9) What's a ReplayTV? Is it like a Tivo?
A: More or less, but many would say it's superior. More features, no FF commercials, and easier to hack/upgrade.

10) Do you work for these guys?
A: Nope, just a happy customer.

The only downsides I can think of:
* Shipping was FREE for awhile. It's now $12 🙁
* You may be charged sales tax. The prices listed above don't factor these in.

I've had 4 replaytvs and love them all. Get 2 so you can record 2 things at once, hook them up to your network so you can watch shows from one replaytv (ie in your bedroom) on another (ie in your living room).

i have ourchased several replaytvs and i think they are better then tivo, but now that i own a media center edition, i am a convert

Out of curiosity, what's so great about "media center edition".

a lot of things, i can collect all my media into one palce, i can watch the content through my xboxes or other media centers or computers easily, conflict resolution is loads better, there is no monthly fee, i have a working computer attached to a tv that i can play games on, ican record and watch HDTVs

Sure sure, I'll be sure to think of you when Tivo starts to let tv execs delete shows from your box so they can sell season dvd sets.

Replay is great, these are great deals. Thanks for the info!

It's human nature -- people tend to like what they're familiar with. If you're happy with your Tivo, good for you.
It's not my intend to "convert" anyone -- just offering a hot deal where I see it.

Well said jwardl...very professional not to get into the amd/intel/ replay/tivo/ coke/pepsi debate. I use mythtv and sometimes I hate it but only have myself to blame. I may pull the trigger on this for my girlfriend.

thanks

have owned a replay for 3 years now. I only regret that I didn't get the lifetime subscription. Great DVR, but if you plan on getting satellite tv I wouldn't recommend it.

I've been using Dishnetworks for 4 or 5 years now with my replays. I own a pvr501, but I liked the replaytv interface and options better.

I'd recommend to anyone using Dish or Directv to use a replaytv with them. I've used both with my replaytv and moving between the two was very easy beccause the interface never changed. The only advantage the dishpvr501/directivo (and now the directtv dvr) has over replaytv is the ability to record the stream from the sat, and not need to re-encode it.

I'm not saying Tivo isn't a decent product, but there are features replaytv has that I would miss if I was forced to switch to Tivo. Mostly, the transport funchtions. For exmple, being able to press 20 Jump, and jump to the 20 minute mark in a show is nice. As is being able to press 20 quick skip to skip ahead 20 minutes from my current place in the show.

I've been thinking about building a PC based DVR, but I still haven't gotten myself worked-up enough to pull the trigger on it. This would be more of an exercise in tinkering with a cool new toy than anything else. Replay has done a very good job of keeping me a happy camper with their product.

I have owned 2 replays for about 3 years now, I can't stand to watch live TV; Now that the companies are almost giving these away, there's no reason not to have one.

btw.. just buy the smallest one, and put in a bigger HD yourself its really simple to do.

This might be a stupid question, but it might apply to someone else (I kind of doubt it tho).

With this (or a Tivo) would I be able to setup the unit to record shows and then watch them from my computer? I ask because I have cable and a computer, but no TV. From what I have read about the ethernet port, it only allows one to play accross ReplayTVs and send pictures from a computer to be viewed on a TV. If it is not possible out of the box, is it possible by a hack of some sort?

Thanks!

DVArchive is your friend. Record on the RTV, d/l and watch on your networked PC.

Your FAQ is wrong !

A: No -- it makes a nice dust collector without one.

Correct answer: you will NOT get your rebate without subscription.

Also change (4):
4) Why should I buy one? I can rent one from my cable/satellite company.
Yes, you can get cheaper DVR from D!sh without any rebates <currently $4.98/mo>

--just my $.02 (After PM, coupon, IR & MIR)

Well, I was referring to the usefulness of the Replay itself, with a grain of humor. We're both saying that a subscription is virtually essential. Are you saying I FAQed up?

As for the Dish DVR, rental makes rebates irrelevent. But, $5x12=$60 (rounded).
In the long run, it's cheaper to own one of the Replays -- at least when it comes to the lower capacity models. OTOH, rental means less money all at once, but buying a Replay does too if you pay for it on a credit card.

In the end, each to his own.

Not out of the box, but if you're willing to do a little work (and have a PC that can act as a WiRNS proxy server) it can be reenabled on these models. Not to mention that you get Internet Video Sharing too, which is way cool if you miss a show cuz with Poopli you can get it from one of your 'friends'. See this site for details.

Can your Tivo do this? 🙂

do the prices listed(after MIR,IR) INCLUDE the subscription fee or is that a separate purchase?

Separate.

Hmm... For only $10 a month I get an dual tuner HD DVR from my cable company so I can record HDTV, or I can buy a ReplayTV to record SDTV, hope I get the rebate back, and pay $12.95/month.

No thanks.

This deal works best for someone who already owns "1" ReplayTV on lifetime subscription (like me) and can add another unit for low initial cost and a $6.95/mo fee. Eventually, HDTV will become widespread enough to make the Standard Definition (SD) ReplayTV obsolete.

At that time, I will be sad and glad. Glad for the higher qual HDTV, sad for the passing of a great idea and interface. My multiple Replays allow everyone in the family to record and watch their shows from any TV or PC (replays network exceptionally well). The tools available for your PC enhance the ReplayTV experience (DVArchive, WiRNS, RTVPatch to install larger hard drives, and more conversion tools - think TV to DVD burn).

This is one of the first techno devices that my spouse quickly adopted (has an extremely high WAF - wife acceptance factor). 🙂

Oh, I did buy another 40GB unit at the summer sale prices.

Your FAQ is misleading. TiVO has a similar rebate deal and it has TiVO To Go, something Replay TV does not. Also, a satellite company will often give away a PVR, not rent it, all you'll pay is $4.95 per months, for as many PVR's as you want as long as you pay for each receiver.
