When I saw that Circuit City was participating in the MSN Wallet 20% rewards program, I checked out their prices on ReplayTVs. If you go to their site and search for ReplayTV, it will bring up the brand new 5040 40 Hour unit at $299. There is already a $50 rebate on this unit.

20% of $299 is around $60 MSN money that you will get in February. So $299 shipped free minus $50 rebate minus $60 MSN dollars comes out to around $189.

There is also a 1% ebates cashback. I *think* you can safely use ebates with this as long as you use your MSN wallet when you check out. The $3 might not be worth it though.

If you want to be on the safe side, use this link to go through MSN before hitting Circuit City. You still need to make sure to use your MSN wallet when checking out.

good deal - keep in mind that unlike last year you will not receive the $60 from MSN as a check, instead you will be receiving MSN Dollars that you can use online to buy something else

very easy to hack:

new models - automatic commerical skip, broadband hookup, send/receive shows over the internet

just like tivo - either $250 for activation or monthly fee ($10/month for replay, $13/month for tivo)

(Bump)

This doesn't expire until the Dec 16th when the MSN rewards expires.

I haven't taken advantage of this yet, but can anyone think of any reason why I shouldn't jump on this deal if I'm in the market for one of these DVRs? Its the newest version and its the same price as its predecessor was a couple weeks ago. Add on the MSN rewards and you get $60 of free stuff more than before.

I think I'm going to go for it.

I'm just starting to do some research to decide which PVR to buy. My friend who has the satellite tivo raves about how clear it is since there is no digital to analog conversion. If you have a satellite feed does this replaytv unit have a digital input for that?

Thanks...

if you have directv & you get your locals from directv then directivo is an excellent option - it records the mpeg stream directly & you have 2 tuners...if i had directv this is probably what i would get

but if you don't have directv OR you care more about video extraction than replay is the way to go...at this point the new replays have features you simply cannot get with tivo: broadband hookup, commercial skip, send/receive shows over the internet & the ability to easily extract mpegs

there are still some things that tivo does better than replay, mainly with the ability to prioritize shows to be recorded...but all-in-all i think replay is the better option

You can re-enable the 30sec skip button on TIVO again so don't count that against TIVO.

Any info/websites on how to extract mpegs...thats what I am interested in and why I would purchase a DVR. I would like to convert some stuff to SVCD/DVD

that's why i didn't list it...having said that replays have better navigation within shows...you can press n (n = any number) + the quickskip or instant replay to move that many minutes forward/back within a show

Alternatively, you could get the TV2000XP by Leadtek at newegg that allows you to record tv shows to hard harddrive. From the reviews it seems like this is the best tv tuner card on the market and for $60.99 shipped its a steal. Combine this with the $99 120gig Maxtor from BB and you have yourself a very nice PRV! PLUS there is no tax (except in cali) and no rebates and you are ordering from the best company on the net. Order today and you might get the card on friday!

Similar features to a ReplayTV: broadband hookup, send/receive shows over the internet, scheduled recording.

Biggest plus: NO FEES! Also, it allows you to hook up a VCR/PS2/Camcorder to your computer and watch/record/play. This is the PERFECT card for a dormroom that is just too small for a montior and TV. This card records in MPEG 1, 2, or 3 (including DivX!) so you can burn shows right to VCDs. Typical file size is 6-7MB per minute so a 30 minute show would be ~200MB.

Biggest minus: you would need a card w/ TV out to watch the shows on a normal TV

Actually, re-enabling Tivo's 30 second skip requires a tedious procedure of punching in secret codes. If successful, one of the remote button functions is lost to the new feature. Most frustrating, however is that the "hack" only lasts a little while. You have to start over each time the power goes out or Tivo upgrades your firmware. I'm shocked that anyone would consider that to be even remotely similar to Replay's seamless commercial skip feature.

ANY5546,

What about an integrated EPG (electronic program guide) ...does it have one?

Thanks,
Kirsten

Yep, it definitely is a pain to have to reenable the function every time they update the SW. However, TiVo's superior conflict resolution was the selling point for me. I'd sacrifice all of RePlay's other great features for that alone.
Now hopefully the guys at TiVo will wise up and make the 30 sec skip as well as the ff/rew n minutes standard featues.....keeping my fingers crossed....

To be honest, I dont know. I dont actually have my card yet, just ordered it today. I checked their website and there wasnt any mention of anything like an EPG so I would assume it doesnt have one. What do you expect for $60 though?

I love my Replay TV... My parents have a TIVO and I like the Replay Menu a lot more...

TIVO is too much like a PVR for kiddies... While the Replay has more of a plain and functional menu system. I would change a few things about both menu systems, though... - like make them respond faster.

It would be nice to be notified of when I schedule a conflict.. but overall the Replay Menu is still much better, IMO, because of its nice organized categories.

Ok, I bought one today and picked it up and installed it to work with my directv. It works fine, but it seems to take about 3-4 seconds to change channels, is that normal for all these PVR's? Would I be better off with direcTivo?

slow channel change is standard with any pvr because it has to start recording/enconding each channel as you change it...eventually you will probably watch much less 'live' tv...at which point the slow channel changes don't matter

directivo is nice, dual tuners, best picture quality...just depends what you want more, replay-only features (commercial advance, extracting video, send receive shows, etc) or the features that directivo has (dual tuners, low/free monthly fee, great pic quality)

I currently own a Tivo but am thinking of making the ReplayTV move simply because of its networking capabilities. If I understand it correctly some of the software out there allows users to stream shows that are stored on the Replay. Can't do that with the Tivo although I understand it is possible to extract shows with some effort.

As for the 30-second skip feature on the Tivo, it's NOT tedious at all. Simply follow the following:

Select-play-select codes are called that because you simply hit select, then play, then select, then something, then hit select again.

Type in select-play-select-3-0-select to turn on the 30 second skip mode. You should hear a "ding-ding-ding" sound. That means you've made change.

Is that tedious. Tivo's been "silent" about these features because unlike ReplayTV, they're trying to play nice with the networks (ever notice there's a Tivo in Friends?). Replay on the other hand doesn't seem to have a problem with stepping on network tv's toes, hence all the lawsuits.

Finally, slow channel changing. There are two types of slow channel changing to me. One being the 2-3 second delay as the show is cached and two, the dreadfull "taking my time to input the channel number" delay when using the IR blaster to control the cable/sat box. You can't do anything about # one, but if you can always try to use the serial connector for issue two.

All - the DVARCHIVE software (by far the best of the ReplayTV video extractors) doesn't work with the 5000 series - it works with the 4000 and 4500 series only.

It's *great*, though, if you have a 4x00 series ReplayTV - it works seamlessly, and you can easily make rules to copy or move ALL videos from your Replay to your PC's hard drive, and then you can, from your ReplayTV, play those videos *off of your computer's hard drive*. Pretty handy - and totally does away with the need to purchase a larger hard drive for your Replay, as long as you keep your PC on most of the time while watching the ReplayTV...

Very highly recommended. :)

That said, I returned my ReplayTV 4500. I bought one, the quality was horrible, and it died at powerup. I returned it and got another one; the quality of recording was still horrible, so eventually I returned it - and this is with the Circuit City $232 deal ... I just don't think it's worthwhile given the very poor recording quality.

My ReplayTV 3060 and Showstopper continue to function perfectly, even almost 2 years after purchase. They're both *great*, but not networkable, so I plan to spend a few bucks and put a larger HDD in the Showstopper one day.
