What do you do if you have digital cable?

Can the ReplayTV completely replace the digital box from the cable company? If not, is it possible for it to control the box somehow? I want a ReplayTV bad.. but if it's not compatible with digital cable it won't work for me..

No, the RTV won't replace your digital cable box. However, the unit should come with an IR Blaster to allow the Replay to control the digital box by sending it remote commands. Some people have a lot of trouble with this method, though. Or, I think you can connect the RTV to certain cable boxes with a serial cable. I've never seen it done, though.

did anyone else see that replaytv raised their prices?

The 5040 is now $139.99 and the 5060 is now $209.99. Still an ok deal, but not as hot anymore.

I just ordered and it showed $139 minus $20 for ReplayTV owners, whatever that means. With tax and shipping to Cupertino the price ended up at $144.89, so it ended up not being that great of a deal but good enough. Now I can dump the tv tuner in my PC!

Question: If you go month to month does some of it go towards the lifetime subscription cost? I'm sure in three years there will be better/cheaper DVRs and services, but you never know.

I almost picked up a 5080 at Best Buy in Tacoma for $179 over the weekend so I can record the Sopranos. I gave Comcast a call just to make sure they wouldn't be rolling out their PVR service in my area soon. They told me that it's 12+ months away, but they said that video-on-demand is available now. Sure enough, every show I wanted to record with a PVR was already available with video-on-demand FOR FREE, plus enough movies to kiss netflix goodbye forever.

If you have digital cable and haven't checked out On-Demand, I highly recommend that you do so before investing in a PVR and another monthly subscription.

Yes you can change. A lot of people I know pay the monthly fee, then do the HD upgrade trick. If successful (which it always is), then they will pay the lifetime activation. I think that they want to make sure they don't screw up the unit and lose out on the lifetime activation fee.

Good thinking, stick with monthly fee, upgrade HD if it's successful THEN pay for lifetime.

What's the HD trick? Can it be converted to record HD programming in HD resolutions?

Any thoughts on the 4504? I really don't know much about these but it comes with more cables than the 5040 and I think it looks nicer.

If you're okay about not receiving any software enhancements in the future and have no plans to communicate with any 5xxx series of the ReplayTV, you should be quite content with the 4504. As a matter of fact, the remote that comes with the 4504 is probably better than the one that comes with the 5xxx series.

Video quality is higher on 5040. To my eyes, 40 GB hard drive: standard video quality on 5040 (can record 40 hrs) = medium video quality on 4504 (can record only 20 hrs). 4504 Standard video quality often looks blocky, somewhat annoying. Build for 4xxx is rock solid, never crash, never tune to wrong channel; 5xxx crashes 1~2 times per months, future software update should fix it. 4xxx has VGA port, 5xxx does not. I would go with 5xxx, mainly because of video quality.

If you plan to use it more than 2 years, life time $300 is better deal. When you paid it by month, later you upgrade to life time, you still need to pay $300. Replay tv let you transfer life time subsription to other machine, it is a piece of mind, if your machine dies young. You do have 30 days to cancel it.

Why? What is the difference between the two. Best I could tell is that the 5504 has toslink output and the 5040 does not.

Any features that the 5040 has that the 5504 doesn't or vice versa?

The 50xx series have CA (Commercial Advance) and IVS (Internet Video Sharing) out of the box. CA will automatically skip commercials. However, both the 50xx and 55xx series have software that is now available for you to manually skip commercials with one press of the right/left arrow keys using a feature called Show|Nav. IVS will allow you to send/receive shows that you or your friends missed.

ReplayTV will only let another owner of YOUR machine use YOUR lifetime subscription. If you get a different unit, you have to pay for a new lifetime subscription.
